As of the last few days we seem to have an established pair of Mute Swans on the Fairbottom Branch canal at Daisy Nook. Both have metal rings on their left leg, one has a blue ring 4API on it's right leg. They have been observed displaying and mating recently. Preliminary nest building was abandoned today. Is anyone able to give any history to 4API?

Swan was ringed as a male cygnet at Reddish Vale 28/9/14, sighted crime lake 18/4/15, Gorton 2015 & 2016 then back at crime lake 3/10/16 (from Steve Christmas)
Sad news today. Mute Swan right leg ring 4APL left leg ZY7876 has been found dead on the bank of Crime Lake at Daisy Nook. It would appear that it has been predated by a fox. It has been acting strangely and appeared not to be eating for the last 2 weeks. Could this info be passed on to the bird ring community please. Not sure if Steve Christmas was the original ringer. If someone could message me with any history that I could pass on to interested people at Daisy Nook I would be grateful. My own records first note it in December 2015 at Daisy Nook.
On a happier note a Water Rail has been showing quite well on the canal behind Sammy's Basin. 4 sightings in the last 3 weeks or so.
I'm afraid I'm not very good with gulls and therefore asking if anyone can help with this one from Sunday morning. It has a ring, metal I think, JE345.
Common Gull, probably a Norwegian ringed bird. Try reporting here

Late post from Sunday morning:- Hobby over Crime Lake, half heartedly haranging swallows, then flew off in the direction of Coal Pit Lane / Ashton Road. This is the first hobby I've ever seen and therfore a first for me at Daisy Nook.
Sorry for the late info, a single Red Kite was seen 4/5/17 around 10.30 am flying quite low over the Daisy Nook Country Park. It hung around for quarter of an hour or so before heading off towards Park Bridge. It was observed near to Newmarket Rd by Ian Rigney from Boodle Wood top path. Trust me to be in Tarporley at the time.
It appeared to have a couple of its flight feathers missing and was attracting a lot of attention from the local crows.
Short visit round Crime lake down the canal to Sammy's Basin and back. Very quiet afternoon until reaching the point the canal widens at the back of Sammy's Basin where I was surprised to see a common sandpaper bobbing around. Definitely a site first for me.
A few of the usual tits and finches, mallard (one with 7 young ducklings) and Canada geese (2 sitting on eggs).
One last surprise was a leucistic Canada goose on the lake, another first for me.
I await correction from a larophile who has noted a small difference in the third primary on its left wing ....................................................................................................... HaHaHa ! Have you got anyone in particular in mind Steve ??

Also. Goosander. 2 drake 1 redhead. Little Grebe. Tufted Duck mating on the water.

Good views of the Iceland Gull this morning (Life tick for me ), occasionally flying up and circling Crime Lake but mostly tucking into something on the bank at the far end (Coal Pit Lane end) away from all the Black Headed Gulls. Little Grebe, Goosander (2) and Teal also showing.
Saturday 17th October. 7.15am to 10.00am. Weather- dull and cool at first, warmed up last hour.

Crime Lake this morning, good sightings of a Water Rail in and out of the reeds at the back of the lake, also a Snipe sat in the sun on the Crime Farm side. Not seen either species here for a good while
Cracking views of a Grasshopper Warbler this morning reeling by the side of Crime Lane. Rare to get such a good view. Unbelievably a second bird was competing nearby. I have seen this species here before but not often. 2 was a real bonus before I got soaked to the skin
Of the 4(!) Daisy Nook threads this seems to be the up-to-date one
Common Buzzard heading east towards Alt Hill over Ashton Road where it crosses the Medlock at 11.05 today. Confirmed a probable sighting of a bird heading east from Bardsley towards Wood Park/Knott Lanes 50 mins earlier
Quite a few Swallows around; Coots, Moorhens (both species with chicks seen) Duckling broods x 2, Willow Warbler predominant over Whitethroat, Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps, Coal Tit heard and the best woodland species, Nuthatch - at least two individuals coming down to a wall to collect food/debris from the top, and also, a very hot Wood Pigeon cooling itself down by standing in the Medlock

Sorry for the late post, I led a winter birdwatching walk round Daisy Nook Country Park on Sunday morning 27/1/13. Highlightds were a Sparrowhawk in a tree on the Visitor Centre car park and a Woodcock at the side of Valley Farm at the Riversvale end of the park. Needless to say I missed the Woodcock.
Went for a wonder around at about 1pm on Saturday - 12/1/13
7 Robins. 1 Mute Swan, still had a lot of browny-grey juvinile feathers. Couldn't see if it'd been ringed. 5 Goosanders on Crime Lake, didn't have binocs (amateur mistake ) so couldn't see how many male and female.
My post was March 2010 so not sure if dippers still in this area. They were between Oldham Road and the junction of Alt Hill Road. In the past I have seen them .anywhere along the river from Park Bridge through Daisy Nook
