Brother text me yesterday afternoon whilst walking the dog down the vale to say aswell as the usual Little Grebes and plenty of Tufted Duck, he saw 3 Ring-necked Parakeets near the visitor centre.
Had quick walk round the park looking for a kingfisher, but ice on all the ponds put paid to that.
3 male mandarins and a pair of little grebes were the only notable birds, but on leaving the warden did tell me a wood duck had been seen in the morning on the top pond.
There was one for a couple of days last year so hopefully it will return.
Wander around the pools this morning. 2 Kingfisher, 2 Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, drake Mandarin Duck, 2 Muscovy Duck,Grey Heron, 30 Tufted Duck.
- Drake Wood Duck showing beautifully on Community Garden pond. It kept making some cute whistle like calls as it seemed to stick close to one particular female Mallard.
Having had 4 or 5 trips out this year specifically to see this species and failed, it was serendipity to find one while out for a walk with our granddaughter.

No Kingfisher though which have been seen there regularly.
Also saw the Peregrine today, in addition to Chris 4 Skylark and pretty sure an adult Yellow Legged Gull perched up with the Black-headed Gulls on the main Mill Pond.
Well I gave it a good go in the rain this morning from dawn till 09.00, spending the bulk of the time near the inflow stream. Lots of bird song but no Cetti's for me.

Last Thursday night Stockport council voted unanimously to approve the building of 99properties by a private developer inside greenbelt and country park land. This is despite a petition of 14500 signatures , and 1500 written objections. Nowhere is safe folks !
Went for a walk in the park with the grandchildren today and left the camera at home.
As expected I wished I hadn't because while we were pick-nicking in front of the railway arches a young peregrine started hunting between the arches and kept stopping to perch on the tie rods of the structure.
After 10 mins of this I could contain myself no longer and went home for the camera.
Exit peregrine.
Canada geese numbers are building and sand martin numbers appear to be falling.
Chiffchaff and willow warbler heard but not seen.
Surprisingly moorhens have very new young. They and the coots must have managed 2 if not 3 broods this year.
Sand Martins are back and starting to nest in riverbank.
On the lakes: Canada geese Tufted duck Mallard A male Mandarin duck paired with a female Mallard. Grey Heron Two large turtles sunning themselves on a log. Coots + young Moorhens. Mute Swan Grey Wagtail.
Round the woods: Treecreeper nest building in a box. Nuthatch GS Woodpecker Blackcap Willow Warbler Chiffchaff Jay Plus usual tits, thrushes & crows

But the highlight was a lovely kingfisher sat in the trees for ages before darting across the water. Thanks to the birders who helped me find it.
For the first time in ages got to trot round my local patch the 'nature reserve' at reddish vale only to find the over zealous and out of control volunteers had quite frankly destroyed a lot of good habit for wildlife, many trees and shrubs eradicated to make the place look more tidy for people. A lack of direction from the council who no longer have the resources to lead this. What a sad reflection of our times, I will post my sightings when I calm down, Merry Christmas
Coot 27 (included one Darvic ringed bird - White ANF)
Steve Christmas has informed me that this bird was originally ringed as an adult at Moses Gate, Farnworth on 27/10/2012. This was the first sighting since ringing.
