Just returned after a week in this historic area. History, volcanoes, scenery were the purpose of the trip, but a few decent birds were seen during the week, and what follows is a brief list of some of the key species people may be interested in, and where they were seen.
Blue Rock Thrush: singing male in Pompeii ruins was a highlight. Also in Herculaneum and in Amalfi.
Italian Sparrow: common especially in more built up areas. Tree Sparrow more so in rural areas.
Sardinian Warbler: Pompeii, Herculaneum, Capri and rural spots.
Serin: bird of the trip really. Singing and displaying in most areas where trees were present. A joy.
Black Redstart: nearly all spots visited. Common throughout.
Peregrine Falcon: nesting in crater of Mount Vesuvius, top of Capri chairlift and on Castel Nuovo in Naples City. Flypast at eye level at first two sites.
A few Swallow, many Blackcap and Chiffchaff were also seen in a total of 47 species. Two additional were heard only, Firecrest and Cettis Warbler.
Please message if anyone would like to know more about the sightings and/or areas visited.
