A sign of the times sadly in my reaction, but I was astonished to see 3 active House Martin nests on the upper floors of Brewski and the Chorlton Tap on Wilbraham Road. I imagine they have nested there for years but it is so unusual in built up areas now, and obviously it has been a terrible year for hirundines in 2024. The acrobatics and the sheer pace as they seem to slam into their nests is incredible to watch. For once I wasn't desperate for the bus to turn up...
I was woken at 6:06 am this morning by the sound of a cuckoo (chorlton). Probably the same bird seen by Pete Hines at Turn Moss. Garden tick? It would be my second garden tick during lockdown. The other being a kingfisher flyover. Chris
Again no binoculars at work but pretty sure there was an adult Yellow Legged Gull at 11am this morning feeding around Chorlton High School. Viewable from track by Chorlton Brook.
As another suggestion I saw a bird without my binoculars whilst at work on Wednesday which was following a flock of Long Tailed Tits along Chorlton Brook. Goldcrest size but I thought flew a little different. Zipped along.
It was going from Chorlton Park upstream near the path that runs through Chorlton High School.
Firecrest 1 in my garden in the Yew trees at the Edge Lane entrance of Thornlea Lodge, 24 Edge Lane, Chorlton, M21 9JF, briefly at 13.15 (picked up with the naked eye at about 10 metres range and it stayed long enough to get my bins and get onto it). No further sign by 15.30 when all bird activity had tailed off. Suggested search areas, the Yew trees at the Edge Lane / Wilbraham Road junction, gardens opposite along the path to Meadow Court and the conifers along Wilbraham Road to Manchester Road.
Goldcrest 2 (at least) Redwing 30+ Ring-necked Parakeet 3 Nuthatch 1 Greenfinch 3 (including returning female with ring on right leg)

11.02 : a text message from Tony O'Mahony woke me from a snooze on the sofa, 'Red Kite flying west towards Chorlton seen from Wilbraham Rd / Withington Rd junction'
11.10 : stood outside my home 2 Red Kite together came lazily drifting over west. I took some photographs as they came over. Keeping track on them ran to Longford Park where they were lost to view behind trees at 11.17 and appeared to have veered SW slightly.

Sparrowhawk flying around above my flat this morning, just by the Tesco garage on Manchester Road. Also 2 Grey Wagtails. They are resident all year round, but always nice to get a good view of them as I mostly just hear one or two as they fly over.
2 separate sparrowhawk sightings over Chorlton yesterday. 1 over my flat on Brantingham Road (Adult) 1 over Ivy green Road opposite graveyard, whilst I was on my way to Chorlton Ees. (Juv.)
Also noticed a lot more Jay activity in the area over the last week.
