Hi Colin. The majority of a Kingfisher's diet in indeed fish, mainly Minnow, Stickleback, and other fish of that size, although they sometimes do catch larger fish. They also eat aquatic insects, freshwater crustaceans such as Shrimp, and also tadpoles are on the menu. Hope this is of help.

Six days later looking for the Skelmersdale Kingfishers and I got another sighting close to where I saw the 2 Kingfishers. I was this time close enough to take a better photo.
The river is ideal but as far as I know there isn't any fish in it so don't know why they are there. I know they eat insects as well but is their main diet fish?
I got 2 Kingfishers today on another stretch of the river Tawd in Skelmersdale. The best thing about it is it's on virtually my doorstep. Back tomorrow with a Professional Wildlife Photographer to take some decent photos. My shots were taken too far away so maybe I'll learn something from a Pro.
Hi I normally go to Mere Sands Wood in Rufford and know what to look for as well as the Kingfisher's distinct call.
On Wednesday I was down the river Tawd with my dog Woody, and I heard the distinct call of a Kingfisher. It was dark were I was next to the river and I got a glimpse of a fast moving bird just above the river and it followed it and went out of sight.
I went back on Thursday to the same spot and waited for about 10 minutes and something flew past at the side of me and when I looked I saw the Kingfisher flying towards the trees above the river bank. With me being were I was it might of saw me and diverted so I waited again and heard the distinct call from further down the river and it was getting closer and then it suddenly stopped.
