100-150 Redwings at the Platt Lane Sports Centre.
They were on the Platt Lane training pitch, although they feed throughout the Platt Fields area.

Blackcap singing by Thelwall Avenue from the Loop. Minimum 4 Chiffchaff around Fairfield and Wright Robinson playing fields.

4 Chiffchaff today on the Fallowfield Loop. 2 up by Fairfield Golf Course, 1 by Houldsworth Golf Course and 1 by St Werburf's Road Tram stop.

Also Bullfinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Ring Necked Parakeet, Nuthatch, many singing Song and Mistle Thrush, Goldcrest, Grey Wagtail

I saw a sparrowhawk catch a small bird, mid-air, above the bowling green/tennis club this evening about 7pm - very exciting.

Unconfirmed report of a Green Woodpecker feeding on flying ants at the top end of the Fallowfeild loop behind Sainsburys this afternoon.
I saw and heard a Green woodpecker along the loop a few years ago, although never once since.

When I went on Brighton Grove allotments at 12 today there was a cock pheasant walking across the path!

Gunnery lane woods.

A lively spring feeling in the woods around midday.
30+ Blackbird foraging under the bramble, spread across the woodland.
at least 4 Bullfinch, 3m 1f seen but could well of been twice that counting birds heard to.
Usual flocks of Blue and Great tits and also Goldfinch.

For lack of anywhere else to put this I've settled on the Fallowfield thread but actually relates to the woodland along Gunnery Lane, behind Chancellors hotel off Mossely road.

Feeders by gunnery lane -
Chaff, Green and Bullfinch (1m 2f)
flock of 5 Fieldfare in the hedge beyond - not often I've seen/heard fieldfare in this area.
Blue, Great and Long-tailed tits.

A nice little woodland, looking forward to seeing it in summer.

I saw a pheasant roosting in a tree at the back of Thorne House early (6:30) on the 22nd and again same time this morning (25th). Think it was a male but it was pretty early and low light.

I suppose it's not unusual given the amount of green space and woodland we have around Thorne House but I didn't expect to see one this so far in the city and certainly not twice.

Also saw a male bullfinch yesterday, which was good as I've not seen one around here before.

I think this bird has been around for a number of years.



A former colleague saw this bird in 2002 !

Male Golden Pheasant seen in the Owens Park area twice recently by a colleague at work (30th July and again on 8th August).

A blurry snap can be seen on the Wild About Manchester website, along with a description of the first sighting.

Apologies Ian for having to move the posts as the Fallowfield thread was only created after my posting.

I put it under the main Black Redstart thread as Fallowfield isn't that far from the City Centre.

Maybe on reflection, I should have made a new thread.

I've also had Coal tit, Stock dove and Kestrel earlier in the year. I know its still nothing earth shaking!

Keith- You can't call Ladybarn parks gull roost quiet!

I will have another look but i'm still not sure on a white dove, the wings are a different shape, unless they have been bread specifically like that?
I'll see if I can get a photo, or at least a better description.

I saw a group of them - 8 or 9? - on the corner of Filey Rd a few years ago. White doves, the kind magicians used to produce from top hats. Rather like the 'farmyard' geese and hybrids you get in Platt Fields Park, I've no idea where they fit in the birding world. And you must know our Egyptian goose that lives there with the Canadas.

Speaking of which, I saw a treecreeper in the park about 3 weeks ago, and have seen a kingfisher flying along the watercourse.

Other Fallowfield possibilities, apart from our many (I hope) greenfinches, have included nuthatch, great spotted woodpecker, blue, great, long tailed and coal tits, bullfinch, chaffinch and gold crest. A ring necked parakeet from the park popped in one day. And there's the sparrow hawk who eats a pigeon in the car park now and then. Apart from that, its pretty quiet round here.

There's a dovecote on Mosely Road just round the corner from Sainsburys in Fallowfield . I've seen them in Sainsburys car park many times, and have always presumed that they came from the dovecote.

Filey road, just behind Kingswood park, a friend pointed out at least four birds around the size of a wood pigeon. All four a completely white with bright pink underwings.
Apparently they are there most mornings.
I presume they are escapees from near by, just what type!?

Not had a good enough view of them to say wether they have a crest.
