On a stroll through the park with my little boy on board on Saturday I saw a small finch in a tree near the stables. It was silhouetted and I din't have binoculars. All I could tell was it had a very deeply forked tail and was singing continuously in a way that I am not familiar with. I don't know my little finch songs well I have to say but to me it wasn't Goldfinch which I know well (my mum calls them the chattering classes). It lacked the intermittent wheeze that I associate with Siskin. I've had a listen to some Linnet song on line but that doesn't sound quite right. Leaves Lesser Redpoll I'm guessing but can't seem to find a decent sound clip to compare. Can anyone help? It's only a 15 second snippet. Little thing just sang and sang.
Still some Redwing in the park last week.
Was full of song on Saturday. Spring is coming. Exciting times.
6 redwing 4 fieldfare 1 song thrush 7 mistle thrush 20+ blackbird only found 1 tree that still has some berries left on it in the old pitch & putt area (as Eugene mentions, now the disc FRISBEE golf ! ) they will soon be gone.
Yeah, it seems like a good area for them! thanks for letting me know that they've been around before. I guess it's just luck sometimes! Is the Old pitch and putt area, what is now the Disc (Frisbee) Golf area? Thanks, Eugene
10 + Redwing Song thrush Mistle Thrush c50 Starling 3 Goldcrest c40 Goldfinch Chaffinch Blue tit Great Tit Robin 1 Heron
Still hoping for Waxwing to turn up! Good amount of berries around.
Eugene they are around (not many) but still keep looking, I had a flock of 50+ waxwings in the old pitch & putt area several years ago enjoying all those berries.
3 Great Spotted Woodpecker 1 Goldcrest 10-20 Long tailed tit 10 Song Thrush, also possible missile thrush Blue tit Great tit Coal Tit Greenfinch Goldfinch Jackdaw
Plus many more of the usual suspects.

Never sure where to put sightings from my own house. Don't feel it warrants a topic of it's own
Anyway I'm just east of Longford park.
A skein of Geese (maybe 50 or so) passed over due west on Saturday around 5pm. Quite high and silhouetted. Honking was not Canada, much higher pitched. My assumption was Pink foot but my Dad says there are a lot of Brent at Southport which is due west from here.
Anyone got any thoughts.
Hi Gervase
There is a county garden birds thread for birds seen in or over the garden, that may be the best bet, but Ian will know for sure
I (personally) have never heard of lots of Brent geese being at southport, however one thing they haven lot of over there, especially now, is pink-footed geese. Hope this helps Joel.

Hi,
We saw the ibis on the single storey roof of Robin Hood Beds, behind Stretford Mall and opposite Robin Hood pub. I wasn't sure if it was a glossy ibis or bald ibis - I have a photo but I'm not sure how to post it on here. It was ringed, so it's probably not the Hattersley ibis spotted July 2012!
Thanks,
Alex
for some reason I think I am being followed today, by common redstarts after leaving one at chorlton ees, and relocated the one at turn moss, and then on my way back through Longford park I have only gone and found another, located on the pitch and putt course. first seen around 2.30pm but then lost it and relocated at 3.10pm but elusive. no signs of the ring ouzel.
Great find Steven I went to look for it but couldn't locate the pitch and putt, let alone the Ring Ouzel!
hi ben sorry you could not find the pitch and putt, I should mention though that it is not in use, so there is no flags or fairways, but you can make out the bunkers and a few greens. best way to get to it if you are travelling by car is through the entrance off Cromwell rd off edge lane and drive right into a car park just past the cottages and the pitch and putt is to the back off the cottages. good luck if you try again tomorrow.
Ring ouzel still present as i left just before 6pm, it had a little scrap with a blackbird a few minutes earlier. Still in the same area, pitch and putt course, but did fly out over the field and returned 10 mins later.
also 1 Willow warbler, 6 mistle thrushes.
This is mental !.3rd year in a row the car is in for an MOT in Old Trafford and I walk through Longford Park twice in a day and Steve finds something !. Last year the Redstart on Turn Moss, previous year a Pied Flycatcher in the Park. I Didn't see the Ring Ouzel or Pied Flycatcher by the way
