The numbers of jackdaws around Manchester have increased exponentially over the past twenty years or so. They are breeding closer to the city centre as each year goes by. Nice to see.
Spotted by accident from traffic lights. Pulled up for 10 minutes for a quick count. 200+ birds in trees this early and plenty more arriving. Spoke to one of locals who told me that some nights it gets so full that it over-spills to trees across the road..... actually said " the noisy ~#~#~#~# could do with machine-gunning".... obviously a fan !
With the flocks I see passing over in this direction at dusk this could be a major roost.
Roger.
There certainly are a lot there, they seem to descend on Hadfield numerous times a day I would estimate 300-400 passing over here today

Normally 150/200 coming into roost around the back of Chorlton Cricket Club on Hardy Lane. Must be plenty of larger roosts in some of the more rural areas.
A widespread flock in skeins of at least 250 birds heading SW over head at several hundred metres - only a couple calling rather than the noisy chattering of smaller flocks
