Two Ramsbottom ticks on the school run this morning! Flock of 15 Whooper Swan flew over in the direction of Elton Reservoir and a single Brambling in the Cemetery.
It's been a great year this year for nesting House Martin's around my house .. The best for many years with 9 successfull pairs .. most have fledged their first brood this week and the sky is full of calling birds .. The regular Swift's are also present too and it's a superb sight watching them all feeding after the damp spell ..

This bird/sighting first surfaced on 7th Jan by someone local who wasn't 100% sure what he had seen when I contacted him. Saying that he did find a Great Grey Shrike on Holcombe Hill during autumn 2016 so he does know what they look like.. It has been searched for pretty well several times after that date with no further sightings until it resurfaced on Birdguides this morning of a reported sighting yesterday, despite really bad weather, in a similar area to the first sighting.
I have spent 3 hrs searching the area this afternoon, as seems others have today, and seen nothing but it could easily be missed. Not sure if the original sighting was publicised even though several locals heard about it but it seems people have heard about that sighting now and I'm wondering if thats what has caused the Birdguides alert this morning?
Anyone know who reported it today or saw it yesterday as no locals seem to have any info?
Only negagive information, I to have just spent a couple of hours in the area with no sightings, I have seen your name on the forum but I Dont think we have met.
This is one of my regular areas, dont know if you are aware but Bury old road is the boundry between GMC and Rossendale which is my patch, 10 days ago a Great Grey Shrike was reported in the same area but never relocated, I am not aware of who posted it this time but I dont think it was anyone who is a member of Rossendale Ornothological Club as it did not appear on our web site.
Does anyone have any information about the great grey shrike reported on Birdguides yesterday? I spent 1.5 hours in the area along Bury Old Road above Nangreaves this morning but couldnt find it. A few birds of interest though - buzzard, kestrel and 4 fieldfare.
A Dipper was feeding a fledged juvenile by the Bridge over The Irwell this morning which was encouraging after the double dose of illegall toxins that were dumped into the River earlier in the year ..
Mediterranean Gull feeding with Black- headed Gulls on recently mowed fields off Bamford Rd ..
A nice Adult Mediterranean Gull was feeding in a recently cut grass field along with c70 of Black-headed Gull by the Irwell at the end of Kenyon Street, Ramsbottom today..
lovely sunny but chilly 3 hour winter walk today. c40 fieldfare flying northwest over peel monument car park and nuthatch calling as I was putting my boots on was a promising start, but really was the best of it except Raven croaking over monument and great spotted woodpecker in Saplin wood. also my first singing blackbird of the year on Holcolme old road. He was a little hesitant and singing from within a holly bush but still an encouraging promise of spring.
A walk from Entwistle rail via Wayoh res (1 Great Crested Grebe)across the moorlands to Peel monument produced first Swifts of the year (2 west, then 1) plus a pair of hunting Kestrels and a cronking Raven, and many Meadow Pipits. A fair few Swallows were knocking about as well.
Nice day local birding,3 buzzards over Walmersley road south of Ramsbottom, good views of kingfisher and dipper on the Irwell in Nuttal park all the usual woodland birds
Did a walk today with a friend across Greater Manchester northern boundarys from Worthington Lake, Standish, Wigan to Watergrove Reservoir, Rochdale. Decent walk with mostly dry paths. Obviously not the Rambsbottom area but we did pass through it. !!! Birdwise it was very quiet with not lots to be seen along the walk, however some of the more noticeable bits were.. 1 Chiffchaff near Wigan Golf Course.. The only one in a twelve hour walk.. Huge flock of singing Redwing off Arley Lane. Many hundreds, mainly in trees, impossible to count.. 1 Tree Sparrow off Arley Lane 2 Yellowhammer off Blundell Lane 4 Swallow.. 3 Arley Lane and 1 Holcombe ranges 1 Sand martin Fletcher bank Quarry, Ramsbottom 1 Buzzard 3 Kestrel all day which was pretty poor really. 3 Sparrowhawk.. 2 over Quarlton and 1 Watergrove Res Only 1 Wheatear all day on the top of Winter Hill c20 Golden Plover top of Winter Hill. 1 Greylag Goose over Longworthy Valley flying north 1 Raven, Greenbooth Res 2 Goldeneye Greenbooth Res.
Not lots of birds about in a 33 Mile walk.. Rob Archer
Sat on the edge of Fletcher Bank Quarry this morning looking south and west, an impressive movement of thrushes, mainly Fieldfare all flying west towards Jumbles/Cheetham Close.. Perhaps close to 1000 birds.
First light this am round Fletcher Bank. Saw the following of note.. Single fem\imm Merlin fling NW across the quarry and into Lancs. 4 Grey Partridge 2 Skylarks over S 5 Lapwing by the trig on Harden Moor (Lancs)
For the last few years Dippers have attempted to nest by the main road bridge crossing the Irwell in the Town centre but have been washed out when the River floods (which it regularly does). They have switched on to it this year and are 20 ft up the bank!! Quite impressed...
