2.30pm - 3.30pm (admittedly not the best time of day)
NOTHING apart from a Moorhen with young chick, on the pond by the ruin, and half a dozen Meadow Pipits.
Lots of insect life though, including the most Craneflies I've seen for ages. I'm no expert in creepy-crawlies but there is a theory that Golden Plover and Dunlin are declining due to a fall in the number of Craneflies on the moors. They are valuable food for the recently-hatched chicks. From my experience today, there's no lack of the insects but they appear to have hatched two months late!
Have just learned from Derek Yalden that the craneflies I saw in August were not the moorland species (Tipula subnodicornis) that normally sustains moorland chicks in late May. Apparently there's a difference in seasons between the peat-dwelling species and those that emerge from mineral soils. I seem to have encountered the latter.
I did say I was no expert - will stick to birds in future

probably a plane (this IS Brun Clough..)
Couldn't get internet access last night to put news on...
Bar-tailed Godwit on Res shore at 6.45pm seen for few minutes then watched as it flew off over dam wall and down valley - thanks to helicopter flying over!
It was very windy up there and I'd just been thinking how quiet it had been ...
Bar-tailed Godwit on reservoir at 1845hrs (different to the Castleshaw bird) flushed by a helicopter and flew down the valley. (info thanks to Steve Johnson)
After the bizarre mid-week sighting of 3 youths shovelling sheep 'dung' out of the ruined house , this morning I was looking forward to a bit of peace at first light. However, I arrived in light drizzle to find about 15 large hounds (from a local hunt I assume) being excercised on the site. Plenty of strartled sheep, not many birds! Eventually, they departed, birds slowly began to re-appear...
