RE: Portland observatory

To finish our epic 4 day marathon drive (with enough miles covered to get from Land's End to John O'Groats and back to Land's End) we detoured to Southwell on Isle of Portland for great views of the Great Spotted Cuckoo. It was in first summer plumage and here are a couple of phone-scoped images.

Cheers, John

Good views on Sunday of the 1st summer Great spotted Cuckoo.

After a no show the previous evening, the bird eventually showed well to the assembled crowd feeding on caterpillars in a bush on Reap Lane.

A visit to nearby RSPB Arne produced my first Smooth Snake together with a Grass Snake and Slow Worm. biggrin

3rd October.

After a night's stay in the observatory after visiting RSPB Lodmoor, a quick seawatch with Henry Cook produced 15 Balearic Shearwaters and 1 Storm Petrel amongst the many Gannets and Kittiwakes.

A pair of Peregrines were also seen over the road in the fields.
