RE: Birds in football stadiums

Some sightings from the Joie stadium today (City Academy)

A Kestrel was hovering over one of the other pitches before being chased off by a Magpie.
A Sparrowhawk was hunting over the trees behind the west stand.
Four Ring-necked Parakeets flew over in the direction of Ashton Old Road.

Kestrel tonight in the etihad stadium catching moths on the wing, getting plenty by the way it was in and out off the roof supports. Good win for the lads as well.

Can anyone confirm the identity of the Robin-sized bird flying around the Etihad last night. It was being terrorised by a Kestrel, which caught it at one point but dropped it in the West stand. It spent most of the match flying between the north and south stands.

Peregrine at Macron stadium flying into one of the floodlight stacks yesterday afternoon (20/01). Also two flocks of 30+ waders over the stadium, sorry no idea of species other than they were not lapwing.

Large female sparrowhawk over as the game started.
Movement of large gulls east as the light faded - I assume towards Audenshawe Res.

Whilst climbing up the ramp at the Etihad, looking towards ASDA, a good number of Gulls were flying around, including what suspiciously looked like a Yellow-legged adult, along with Lesser Black-backed, Herring and Black-headed. Unfortunately didn't have my bins with me.
I suppose they could have been on a little scaveging trip from up Ashton New Road.

Last night a Common Kestrel broke cover from its roost under the roof of the Etihad Stadium and flew over the pitch for a brief moment and then returned to its roost.

A common buzzard passing low over Ashton Athletic's Brocstedes Park this afternoon, getting a fine view of ex-Blades keeper Paddy Kenny experiencing a chastening afternoon for visitors Maltby Main.

Following on from a bat, presumed pipistrelle, which spent much of the second half of Wigan v Northampton on Tuesday around the DW Stadium South Stand.

Peregrine flying around Stadium MK during today's MK Dons vs Rochdale game and spending long periods perched on the edge of the roof looking over the pitch. Then I wondered, could it actually be one of the Rochdale town hall birds that had travelled down for today's match?
It flew off when MK scored thier winner late on so obviously it wasn't a true fan leaving before the final whistle-it's not like it had a train to catch or beat the car park rush................biggrin

Magpie on the pitch in front of east stand after the second goal at Old Trafford on sat 7th ...it was ushered off the pitch by the players and sat apparently stunned on the touchline...

not sure how it became to be stunned or why it chose to land on the pitch during play?

Noticed it had vanished 5 mins later , presumably it flew away ?

Andy

Assume it was the same pair that bred on the corner of the Stretford/SAF stands last year. It was often more interesting to watch these and a pair of Mistle Thrushes than some of the turgid stuff from LVG.

2 Kestrels around the Stretford End during the first half of tonight's match. They landed on a ledge underneath the roof for a couple of minutes then flew off. Obviously not impressed by the football on show!

Saturday 26th December 2015, 2.55pm

Just prior to kick off, a Magpie flew into the Etihad Stadium, and landed on a girder above our heads. Not the best of omens for a Sunderland fan, and sure enough, a depressing 90 minutes followed.

Was anyone near enough to identify the little bird that landed on the pitch at Old Trafford this afternoon?

The bird flew down from the direction of the Alex Ferguson stand and landed on the pitch near to the corner at the Stretford End (to the right if you were facing the goal). It remained pretty still on the pitch for a few moments then flew up with a bounding flight and flew round and away towards the opposite end. The bird was too far away from us to get a clear view but looked about pipit sized?

The male spent most of the game trying to settle in the eaves of West Stand with odd forays to the East Stand - must have started roosting there and been suprised by the lights & crowd, especially if it's the one more used to the wide open spaces at the Etihad ;)

During the UEFA Youth Champions League game man city v CSKA at Ewen Fields, Hyde today, a Sparrowhawk took a Starling from under the "scrattin shed" roof. This has a very low roof and the bird was only a few feet above the heads of the crowd.
Hopefully it might take a few of the "streetpeckers" that "christened"my new fleece the last time I was there.
