This afternoon: 2 Kingfishers flew together from old course of River Irwell across A57 to the Manchester Ship Canal. 1 Sparrowhawk (male) which had just caught a small bird 1 Redwing 4 Black headed Gulls perched on the top of a riverside Alder tree. I see this regularly here. Same tree used each time.
29 Redwing with 1 Meadow Pipit and 1 Mistle Thrush all feeding together on the football pitch during a blizzard this afternoon. 1 Teal (m) on the river
2 Goosander (both f) 7 Teal (5m, 2f) - including much displaying 1 Gadwall 9 Mallard - also some displaying 1 Nuthatch 1 Great spotted Woodpecker Song Thrush singing Lots of common bird activity
1 Goosander (f) 1 Grey Heron 30+ Black-headed Gulls - 3 on which were perched at the top of an alder tree. Something I've seen a few times in the park. They have 2 or 3 favoured trees next to the river.
2 Teal - pair - first birds I've seen here all winter! 9 Mallard 1 Cormorant 1 Grey Heron fishing 8 Siskins - feeding on the ground a few feet from the path and showing very well 3 Black-headed Gulls sat at the top of one of the riverside Alder trees again!
c.45 Tufted Duck on the pool - we had about 50 here last winter. Same returning birds? 2 Gadwall 2 Mallard 1 Cormorant 1 Grey Heron 1 Sparrowhawk (f) over 1 Bullfinch - heard 2 Coot 3 Moorhen
1 Great Spotted Woodpecker 1 Nuthatch 1 Lesser Redpoll 2 Siskin 2 Goldcrest 2 Greenfinches Goldfinches Chaffinches 20+ House Sparrows Blue & Great Tits in good numbers 8+ Long-tailed Tits 2 Moorhen 6 Mallard plus the usuals !
