Early visit this morning to check if the Pinkfoot was still there. No sign of it with the Canada Geese, so the good news is it must have been healthy and not an injured one dropping in. Great Crested Grebes up to nine, everything else as normal.
7.45am to 9.55am and a brief walk through early afternoon.
5 Great Crested Grebes 12 Canada Geese Numerous Mallards 1 female Goldeneye 1 Buzzard circling low over the reservoir on my afternoon visit 4 Moorhens 1 Coot 50+ Black-headed Gulls 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull in the morning 2 Great Black-backed Gulls in the afternoon 1 Common Gull 1 Stock Dove at the quarry end. Normally get one or two there around this time of year, but they never stay long.
I checked out Bradshaw Lodges and found that the Grey Herons (five today) were making use of the new lodges being closed to fishermen.
2 Great Crested Grebes 5 Cormorants flew over together from Bradshaw Lodges 2 Grey Herons flying over also, from Bradshaw Lodges 17 Canada Geese c70 Mallards 2f Goldeneyes 6 Moorhens 50+ Black-headed Gulls 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls 3 Common Gulls Pied wagtails up the access road increased to four Plus all the usual birds around the woodland and fields
At 8.20am I saw 8 Grey Herons flying up from Bradshaw Lodges. A few flew over Jumbles Reservoir which I presumed to be heading for Entwistle. However, they headed back after about 15 minutes. Later on at Entwistle I only saw about a dozen birds in the heronry. Many years ago they nested in this area so in the next few days I will be checking this out.
A "normal" Cormorant was at the sailing club on my morning visit. Early afternoon it had been replaced by a "white-headed" one.
8.30am to 10.25am. A thorough search now the ice has gone.
1 Cormorant 1 Grey Heron flying up from Bradshaw Lodges 1 Mute Swan. Unusual here, possibly the lone bird from Firwood Lodges down the valley 9 Canada Geese 65 Mallards 2 pair of Goldeneye together at the top end 1f Goosander 1 male Sparrowhawk flew across the car park and into trees near the Information Centre 1 Buzzard being mobbed by crows at Walsh Fold 6 Moorhens including two in a garden at Horrobin Fold, one of which went feeding on the bird table 70+ Black-headed Gulls 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull 1 Common Gull 21 Woodpigeons 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers along Grange Road 1 Meadow Pipit on fields near Bradshaw Road 4 Wrens 6 Dunnocks 13 Robins 11 Blackbirds 40+ Redwings at Walsh Fold 2 Song Thrushes 1 Mistle Thrush 1 Goldcrest Long-tailed Tits, Blue Tits, & Great Tits 1 Nuthatch 1 Jay 4 Magpies 30+ Jackdaws 12 Rooks 7 Carrion Crows 1 Starling 2 House Sparrows 5 Chaffinches 1 Greenfinch 4 Goldfinches 1 Siskin 3 Bullfinches
Walk through at lunchtime. Nice to see some different ducks, probably flown in from the icy Wayoh.

First bird of the day, being chased out of the trees near the railway footbridge at Grange Road by four Crows. Flew around for about 10 minutes, by which time it had also upset a number of Jackdaws. 1 Greenfinch 30+ Siskins 6 Bullfinches
11 Canada Geese 50+ Mallards 6 Moorhens c75 Black-headed Gulls 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull Woodland birds similar to New Year's day apart from a couple of singing Mistle Thrushes
Not much again as I walked through this morning. 12 Canada Geese 49 Mallards 2 Moorhens 60+ Black-headed Gulls 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull
Seemed even quieter on my way back home at lunchtime until I saw a couple of Grey Herons flying around. They soon increased to six birds circling around together. Normally a sign of birds grouping together before heading to Entwistle Reservoir ready to start nesting.
Late morning amongst the many people and dogs. The sound of Eagley Band playing around the housing estates drifted across the reservoir, much better than the sound of barking dogs. Had a few pints with mates from the band later. The birds were the only quiet things !
18 Canada Geese 60+ Mallards 1 Kestrel 2 Moorhens 1 Coot 80+ Black-headed Gulls 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls over 6 Herring Gulls over 2 Common Gulls 4 Feral Pigeons 21 Woodpigeons 2 Collared Doves 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker 1 Pied Wagtail 4 Wrens 3 Dunnocks 11 Robins 10 Blackbirds 1 Song Thrush 4 Goldcrests Numerous Long-tailed Tits, Coal Tits, Blue Tits, and Great Tits 3 Nuthatches 1 Jay 11 Magpies 6 Jackdaws 8 Carrion Crows 1 Starling 3 Chaffinches 1 Greenfinch 7 Goldfinches 6 Bullfinches
Not much on a morning walk, only a Grey Heron, the tame Canada Goose, Mallards, a Moorhen, and a few Black-headed Gulls, until I got towards the top end of the reservoir. Here I kept seeing ripples and bubbles from a small diving bird amongst the trees by the footpath. It took me nearly half an hour to get a brief view and confirm it was a Little Grebe. My first one here for years.
I passed through again in the afternoon, adding a pair of Goosanders to the morning list. Black-headed Gulls had increased to 80+ with a couple of Common Gulls.
I was told there was a flock of thrushes in the field between Grange Road and the railway. A venture into the field revealed 30+ Redwings.
2 Cormorants 40+ Mallards 1 male Pochard 3f Goosanders on the reservoir + a pair in the unlikely area on Bradshaw Brook at the overflow, between the footbridge and the overflow. 2 Moorhens 1 Coot 40+ Black-headed Gulls 2 Common Gulls
7.45am to 9am. Very windy with hardly anything showing on the Information Centre side. A little better on the sheltered side.
1 Grey Heron, the tame Canada Goose, 32 Mallards, 5 Moorhens, 12 Black-headed Gulls, and a Lesser Black-backed Gull on the reservoir. Woodland birds included 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers (one by the yatch club & one along Grange Road), 1 Nuthatch at Lees Cottages, and a few Greenfinches, Siskins, and Bullfinches. One Mistle Thrush heard from up the access road.
9.15am to 9am & 11.30am to noon. Very windy which meant hardly any woodland birds were heard or seen. A calling Sparrowhawk was the only bird worth noting. Not much on the reservoir either. 1 Cormorant 1 Canada Goose 40+ Mallards 5 Moorhens 20+ Black-headed Gulls
Passing Herring Gulls were worth counting though. I saw my first ones as I walked along Grange Road, a flock of seven, which was already unusual for here. Along the reservoir lots more passed, giving me a total of 65. One large flock contained over 50% of this total. Whilst on Wayoh I saw another eight following the same route heading south towards Jumbles, and another three passed during my later visit.
1 Cormorant 1 Grey Heron 1 Canada Goose. This single smallish individual seems to be one of the young ones from this year that was always smaller than the others. It is very tame and even tried to follow someone back to her house today after she had fed it and the ducks at Horrobin Lane Car Park. It does not mix with other geese when they are about. 50+ Mallards 1 Sparrowhawk 9 Moorhens 1 Coot 20+ Black-headed Gulls 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull 19 Woodpigeons 1 Green Woodpecker 4 Great Spotted Woodpeckers 1 Pied Wagtail 9 Wrens 2 Dunnocks 15 Robins 23 Blackbirds 3 Goldcrests A few Coal Tits, Blue Tits, & Great Tits. Did not see as many as usual due to an absence of Long-tailed Tits 1 Nuthatch 6 Jays 9 Magpies 6 Jackdaws 3 Rooks 3 Carrion Crows 9 Chaffinches 13 Greenfinches 16 Goldfinches Approx 50 Siskins (flocks of 30+ & 13, plus a few others here and there) 8 Bullfinches
1 Cormorant flying over 1 Grey Heron 56 Mallards 6 Moorhens 12 Black-headed Gulls 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull on a buoy + 21 passing through (largest group 12, one of 7, & two single birds) 2 Sparrowhawks. One at the reservoir & one very high up 6 Woodpigeons 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers 1 Meadow Pipit 8 Wrens 2 Dunnocks 15 Robins 5 Blackbirds 1 Mistle Thrush 2 Goldcrests 3 flocks of Long-tailed Tits Coal Tits, Blue Tits, & Great Tits 3 Nuthatches 1 Treecreeper 3 Jays 8 Magpies 10 Jackdaws 2 Rooks 9 Carrion Crows 2 House Sparrows 12 Chaffinches 8 Greenfinches 3 Goldfinches A few Siskins heard but out of sight over the trees 4 Bullfinches
7.55am to 8.55am. Did not stay as long as usual as someone had already been round the reservoir looking for yesterday's Waxwings, telling me there was not much about. They obviously did not stay, not surprising with the lack of berries in the area. The only spot with any berries, by the Information Centre/Cafe, had 20+ Goldfinches & a couple of Siskins.
