Hour at the reservoir this morning. No Cormorants or Grey Herons as work was going on at the embankment end. Not much on the water either :- a couple of Great Crested Grebes, Mallards, Moorhens, & Black-headed Gulls.
There was a Great Black-backed Gull on a buoy though, and another one flew over with a couple of Herring Gulls. A flock of 9 Lesser Black-backed Gulls flew over. A Greylag flew in from Wayoh direction fairly high up, and headed back that way after a few minutes, without landing on the reservoir.

Lots of Lapwings flying around. 70+ flying across the reservoir probably from a flock of 150+ seen flying around farmland not long before. Also had a smaller flock flying over.

14 Great Crested Grebe. One with the youngest bird struggled to swallow a full sized Roach. Quite wisely it ignored the youngster's calls as it would probably have choked it considering the size of the fish. 6 Cormorants 8 Grey Herons 90+ Canada Geese on farm fields. Too far away to see if the usual Greylag was with them. 50+ Mallards 10 Moorhens 30+ Black-headed Gulls 2 Kingfishers at the top end A few House Martins & Swallows at the access road farm 10+ Swallows & a Pied Wagtail at Grange Farm stables

Just the usual stuff about this morning but good views of the Kingfisher family around the yatch club area. I heard them calling from the bridge by the yatch club but could not actually see them. I moved across to the car park benches to look back into this area and soon picked one up perched on a branch. Gradually the others came out of cover, and worked their way along the edge of the reservoir across the front of the yatch club.
Reservoir :- Only one of the newer young Great Crested Grebes seen this morning. The usual birds this morning included a Common Sandpiper & a Kingfisher,
A Kestrel was eating prey on the accesss road at the bottom end near the information centre. Flew off with it's prey as I walked up the road. Another Kestrel was on a wall further up the road near the farm.
Farmland birds included 80+ Canada Geese, a Little Owl, c10 House Martins with a few Swallows, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, a few Goldfinches, & a couple of Linnets. At least 20 Lesser Black-backed Gulls flew over including a flock of 14 birds.
After being worried about the half dozen Mink near the Kingfisher nest a few weeks ago I was relieved this morning to find a family of Kingfishers. I picked the right spot to shelter from a heavy shower as 4 birds were flying around the edge of the reservoir from trees not far from where I was. Not sure if any more stayed in cover.
A Common Tern flew around the reservoir landing on a few of the buoys.
Other reservoir birds included Great Crested Grebes (same numbers as yesterday), Cormorants, Grey Herons, Mallards, Moorhens, & Black-headed Gulls. 2 Swallows at Grange Farm stables.
A Sparrowhawk flew very low (below head height) a few feet from me across the access road and into the farmyard. Also around the farm I saw a couple of Pied Wagtils & 7 House Martins. 5 Swifts flew over the farm.
Walsh Fold fields had 70+ Canada Geese, about 20 Black-headed Gulls, & lots of Woodpigeons, Rooks, & Jackdaws.
From a distance I could make out 2 new juvenile Great Crested Grebes, not sure if there was another one. The 2 older ones now diving, 7 adults present. 3 Cormorants 4 Grey Herons 150+ Canada Geese on farmland whilst I was there. From Holts Fold about 15 minutes after I left I was able to see them fly down to the reservoir. 90+ Mallards 1 Buzzard flying over A few Moorhens included a very young one swimming across the reservoir. No adult with it but just before I spotted it an adult had flown from this area to the other side of the reservoir. Hope it went back for the youngster, 1 Common Sandpiper 15 Black-headed Gulls 1 Sandwich Tern on a buoy for a short while. A first for me on my local reservoirs. 3 Swifts 5 Swallows 2 Grey Wagtails at the overflow + one at the top of the embankment on the reservoir wall
8 adult Great Crested Grebes, the two well grown juveniles, and new ones on the back of the recent nesting female. Unable to see how many new ones as they were just about visible hidden on her back. 4 Cormorants 3 Grey Herons 71 Mallards 3 Moorhens 1 Common Sandpiper 30+ Black-headed Gulls 1 Kingfisher 1 House Martin with half a dozen Swallows when I arrived 15+ House Martins flew in with a Sand Martin as I was about to leave
From the footbridge at the overflow I again counted 6 Grey Wagtails. Also a Dipper by the bridge, and a Mandarin (drake eclipse) wandered across the top of the weir taking me by surprise. A lady walking across the bridge with her dog said it had been around for a few days. I did not see it on my last visit on Friday so it seems it may have been there over the weekend.
10 adult Great Crested Grebes (pair still nesting) + the two juveniles 2 Cormorants 13 Canada Geese 37 Mallards 6 Moorhens 15 Black-headed Gulls 2 Common Terns 10+ Swallows Adult Grey Wagtail with a juvenile on overflow pipes Dipper also at the overflow
Reservoir :- Great Crested Grebes same as a couple of days ago. I managed to see the young ones being fed a fish, and the nesting bird was reluctant to move although the lawn nearby was being mowed. 4 Cormorants 1 Grey Heron flying over 14 Canada Geese 70+ Mallards 6 Moorhens 5 Black-headed Gulls. Numerous others flying over. 4 Common Terns 1 Kingfisher flew past me with a fish landing nearby. It spent a few minutes flying around with the fish, sometimes landing very close to me, even though I was keeping my distance, before flying into cover, maybe to feed young. The problem it was having was with a family of 6 Mink frolicking in the water a few yards away from where it wanted to go. 1 Swift 4 Swallows
10 adult Great Crested Grebes + 2 young ones. One bird still on it's nest by Grange Farm. 4 Cormorants 14 Canada Geese 75+ Mallards 4 Moorhens seen included a juvenile 6 Black-headed Gulls 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls flying over 2 Common Terns 4 Swifts 1 Sand Martin 7 House Martins 10+ Swallows 1 Pied Wagtails + the usual species which included a couple of Buzzards
Dipper seen on Bradshaw Brook from the overflow footbridge. As I was pointing it out to a friend a Kingfisher flew underneath us from the overflow and then past the Dipper.
Reservoir birds :- 8 Great Crested Grebes included one on a nest. No sign of any young ones. 3 Cormorants 2 Grey Herons 14 Canada Geese 55+ Mallards Only 3 Moorhens seen. Unable to see the ponds now in the conservation area so I am pretty sure there would be others about. 2 Black-headed Gulls 3 Common Terns 1 Grey Wagtail
Numerous Swallows around the farms and Grange Road fields
A couple of Buzzards soared around the top end of the reservoir/Bradshaw Road. They had at least a dozen Swifts for company.

I only had time for a short visit this morning, mainly around the reservoir.
6 Great Crested Grebes 2 Greylags 4 Canada Geese. No sign of the goslings, I just hope the parents had them hidden away somewhere. 38 Mallards around the reservoir + a pair with the pair of Grey Wagtails at the overflow, 6 Moorhens 2 Black-headed Gulls 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull A Tern heard flying through. I was behind the conservation area so could not see it. Presumably a Common Tern. 2 Lapwings on the usual field 1 Buzzard being mobbed by a Carrion Crow
8 Great Crested Grebes 5 Cormorants 16 Canada Geese + 3 goslings 29 Mallards Moorhens hiding from the wind ? Only 3 seen today. Pair of Oystercachers on a field by Walsh Fold. Still trying to spot a female here, but the males behaviour suggests there may be one nesting. Plus all the other usual species (Pheasants, Woodpigeons, Collared Doves, Stock Dove, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Wrens, Dunnocks, Robins, Blackbirds, Song Thrushes, Long-tailed Tits, Coal Tits, Great Tits, Blue Tits, Nuthatches, Treecreepers, Jays, Magpies, Carrion Crows, Starlings, House Sparrows, Chaffinches, Greenfinches, Goldfinches, Siskins, & Bullfinches)

Farmland :- 5 Mallards, a Greylag with 12 Canada Geese, 1 Moorhen, Oystercatcher flew in from direction of Hawkshaw, pair of Lapwings, 50+ Black-headed Gulls. A search through them did not reveal any Mediterranean Gulls but a 1st summer Common Gull was a surprise. 1 Sand Martin flying around with half a dozen Swallows 1 Pied Wagtail 1 Little Owl 1m Reed Bunting
8.10am to 9.10am. Nothing doing in the strong wind around Holts Fold and the golf course so went to plan B and checked the more sheltered areas around here & Bradshaw Brook.
Yesterday I thought the Canada Goose on the quarry ledge might have young underneath her. This morning she was on the reservoir with 4 goslings. What a start to life. Being pushed off a quarry by your own mother & no doubt they were pelted with hailstones this afternoon.
Birds seen eating fish today were Great Crested Grebes, a Cormorant, a Common Tern which was being chased around by a Black-headed Gull, and a Magpie ! I saw it stabbing away at a roach by the edge of the fishing lodge at Horrobin car park. Eventually it opened it up and wandered off carrying some of it's insides.
I forgot to mention a pair of Lapwings on farmland in yesterday's report.
8 Great Crested Grebes 2 Cormorants 1 Grey Heron 1 Greylag 20 Canada Geese 40 Mallards 8 Moorhens 3 Black-headed Gulls on the reservoir. About 20 more on farmland. 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull 4 Common Terns 13 Swallows 5 Pied Wagtails on Grange Road field, 3 more around the farms + the usual species
9 Great Crested Grebes 2 Grey Herons 5 Greylags. Came across the reservoir and landed on farmland before being disturbed (farmer had been working the fields since 5am I was told by the other farmer). They then settled on the reservoir with the Canada Geese. 11 Canada Geese 27 Mallards 5 Moorhens seen. With nesting birds hidden from view probably a couple more present. 3 Black-headed Gulls on the reservoir. Only a dozen on fields whilst I was there. 30+ on fields when I scanned from Holts Fold later. A Common Tern flew in from Bradshaw Lodges with a fish and settled on a buoy to digest it. Two more quickly followed, flew around for a while, and then headed off towards Wayoh. Pair of Lapwings between Walsh Fold & access road A distant Curlew near Birches 5 Stock Doves 1 Tawny Owl upsetting a couple of Blackbirds Male Cuckoo called from near Grange Farm stables for a couple of minutes before moving on. 12 Swallows around stables & farms Lesser Redpoll along Horrobin Lane Linnet at Walsh Fold + the usual stuff
Reservoir :- 8 Great Crested Grebes 1 Cormorant 1 Grey Heron flying over 11 Canada Geese 43 Mallards 5 Moorhens 2 Coots 3 Black-headed Gulls 2 Common Terns 6 Swallows at Grange Farm stables. They all mobbed a Sparrowhawk as it flew over. 1 Buzzard soaring around + the usual woodland birds
No geese at Walsh Fold as the farmer was collecting sileage from this area & spreading it across the fields between the farm & Birches. I had already seen lots of Black-headed Gulls on these fields from across the valley viewing from Holts Fold. Searching through them all really paid off as I found 3 Mediterranean Gulls, one of them gave cracking views as it was only about 20 yards away as it followed the tractor. At the farm a Swallow was back, with a Pied Wagtail and numerous House Sparrows as usual. A couple of Lesser Redpolls was unusal though. A male Reed Bunting was at the pond between here & the access road. Two Swallows as usual at the access road farm.
A couple of hours late morning. An increase in Chiffchaff & Willow Warbler numbers. A Blackcap by Grange Road, the only new species from my recent visits.
Reservoir :- 9 Great Crested Grebes 2 Cormorants 8 Canada Geese. The one on the quarry ledge had a Stock Dove for company. 22 Mallards 6 Moorhens 4 Black-headed Gulls 2 Swallows at Grange Farm stables + 1 at Horrobin Fold 1 Grey Wagtail flew the length of the reservoir. Possibly heading for the overflow where I saw one later.
Farmland :- A Greylag with 20 Canada Geese 1 Buzzard Lots of Jackdaws & Rooks 2 Swallows at the access road farm.
9.15am to 11.15am. Sheltered from the wind around the reservoir but nothing new about. Very windy on farmland where there was very little about, not even the usual Buzzards flying around.
9 Great Crested Grebes, 8 of them together in the middle of the reservoir was unusual. They are normally spread around the whole reservoir. The other one was at the top end. 1 Cormorant 3 Canada Geese on the reservoir, nesting bird on the quarry ledge, & 17 on the usual field by Walsh Fold. No Greylags today. 27 Mallards 7 Moorhens 1 Black-headed Gull 1 Kingfisher 1 Grey Wagtail

A pair of soaring Buzzards were joined by a third one, 1 Curlew, 1 Skylark, 4 Pied Wagtails (3 of them at Walsh Fold Farm), As usual lots of Black-headed Gulls, Woodpigeons, Jackdaws, Rooks, & Carrion Crows.
Ousel Nest Meadow :- 3 Buzzards soaring around quite low (presumably the 3 seen earlier), 3 Chiffchaffs, 1 Goldcrest, 2 Nuthatches, 15-20 Siskins.
Grange Road field :- 2 Redwings with a Mistle Thrush, 25 Woodpigeons, 2 Pied Wagtails, 25+ Siskins, 6-10 Goldfinches.
Reservoir :- 8 Great Crested Grebes 2 Cormorants 1 Grey Heron 1 Greylag 6 Canada Geese 28 Mallards 1 Common Sandpiper Not a single gull on the water. All gulls today on fields between Walsh Fold and Walves. Stock Dove on the quarry 2 Pied Wagtails at Grange Road stables A few Chiffchaffs & 1 Willow Warbler
Farmland :- 1 Pink-footed Goose with a white patch on it's face, with a pair of Greylags & a pair of Canada Geese. The next field had 7 more Canada Geese and then 2 more dropped in. 2 Buzzards, 1 Kestrel, Lots of Black-headed Gulls spread across various fields. Looking back across the valley from Holts Fold later on I was able to estimate about 350 birds. 130+ Woodpigeons, 1 Skylark, 1 Meadow Pipit, 2 Pied Wagtails, Corvids included 2 Jays, and a Nuthatch was at the rookery.
Back at the reservoir after my farmland jaunt I saw that the Pink-footed Goose was now on the water with a pair of Canada Geese, and I heard a Mediterranean Gull flying across a field behind a line of trees which meant I could not actually see it.
Reservoir :- Misty & drizzly start seemed to suit 4 Sand Martins & a single Swallow. They left as the weather started to pick up. 6 Great Crested Grebes 2 Greylags flew in to join 14 Canada Geese which included the one on a ledge at the quarry 33 Mallards 6 Moorhens 20+ Black-headed Gulls 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls passing over 1 Grey Wagtail at the embankment end on the wall. Noisy kids & swimming dogs at the overflow no doubt pushed it up here. 1 Stock Dove on the quarry 5 Chiffchaffs (also saw one along Grange Road & one at Chapeltown Road car park. + the usual species
Farmland :- Greylag with a Canada Goose. The Greylag flew down to the reservoir to join the two seen earlier. 4 Mallards 180+ Black-headed Gulls 1 Lesser Black-backed flew across very low 2 Buzzards 1 Curlew 100+ Woodpigeons 1 Meadow Pipit 1 Pied Wagtail 2 Mistle Thrushes Numerous Rooks & Jackdaws House Sparrows at Walsh Fold A few Goldfinches
