I think there was a release scheme at Harewood House, Leeds which musn't be far from the M62/M1 junction as the kite flies... really impressive birds anywhere they're seen.
I saw 3 Red Kites from the M1 in Yorkshire last week One just after the turning onto the M1 from the M62 and then 2 just after the Knaresborough junction.
Pete - I also saw one a few weeks ago at mere corner on the A50 to Knutsford. It was a clear sighting very low and you could see colours and forked tail. They are a beautifull bird.
I was quite surprised to get very good views of a red kit being mobbed this afternoon over the M6 near Euxton [just south of junction 28]. At a few hundred metres away I picked up the angle of the wings and for a second thought "I wonder if that's a really late osprey heading south..." , then as it swung around from the mobbing got clear views of the long and forked tail - it passed directly overhead about 20m up but at the speed I was going I couldn't see any distinguishing features to age it [I was looking for any paler feathering like I've seen on kites at Gigrin and on the M40].
I know they're seen all over now but still a heartening sight!
