Now 2 Mute Swans. Blue 7HPV has been joined by an unringed individual.

Noticeable absence of ducks, even Mallards.

Walk from Bottoms Bridge to Windybottom farm 14.00 - 16.00

I dipper under Bottoms Bridge

Usual numbers of Coot, Moorhen & Mallard

1 Little Grebe - close in to the bank of the larger island & associating with the female Wigeon
1 Peacock - sitting at the top of the right hand tree trunk on the island with the black dovecote
1 Cormorant - decided the Peacock was 'in his seat' & proceeded to mob it. First time i've ever seen a peacock in flight

1 Grey Heron over the horse paddock
c15 Siskin in the tall trees opposite the Main House
c12 Redwing over the Railway Bridge
1 Sparrowhawk over the Railway Bridge
9 Fieldfare over the fields just before Windybottom Farm

10th Nov: 07.30. Thick fog so didn't stay long.

Best was 1 Treecreeper in a tit flock

11th Nov: 09.25 - 11.40. Gates still shut at 10.15 so walked from Bottoms Bridge to Windybottom Farm and back.

A poor showing of wildfowl today. Barring the Canada Goose flock (89) there were only singles of Mute Swan and Tufted Duck on Main Lake. Plus 4 Little Grebes still.

Disturbance is commonplace at this site. Dog walkers, horse riders, anglers, cyclists, trail bikers - all doing their own thing as they are entitled but it doesn't help birders. Well, a new one to add to the list today as Manchester Airport conducted an explosives demonstration in the field next to the bridle way. A series of incendiary and explosive devices were set off, some hidden in a trainer or child's back pack for example. There were some quite pokey, window rattling bangs which obviously disturbed horses in the adjacent fields but only put up c30 Wood Pigeons and 12 Redwings. A small group of the local horse riding fraternity were protesting and it appeared that Manchester Airport had employed a pyrotechnics company and ran quite frequent courses for multi-national attendees. Iraq and Afganistan were mentioned by an airport representative. I've got to say that the temporary signage 'Loud bangs. May scare dogs and horses' was a bit weak and was poorly placed.

On the river:

Regarding Mute Swans at Roman Lakes.

Blue 7HPV, Blue 7HNZ, Blue 7HJH were ringed as part of a brood of 8 on 12/09/2012 at Newport, Shropshire. These 3 siblings were at Roman Lakes from 27th Oct 2012 - 4th Jan 2013.

Blue 7HPV returned to Main Lake on 30th Sep 2013.

4th Oct:

No Pochard but now 4 Wigeon plus the 2 Gadwall have returned (the same pair as 26th Sept - told by wing moult with missing feathers on male's right wing exposing all the speculum)

Increase in Moorhen numbers to 31

The new arrivals were:

1 Mute Swan wearing blue Darvic 7HPV. This is a returning bird that spent last winter at Roman Lakes and departed early January.

The single adult Great Crested Grebe seems to have lost its last chick.

Notable sightings were:
4 Little Grebes in a little huddle (2 Adults moulting into winter plumage and 2 1st winter)
Pair Gadwall (new in)

The Great Crested Grebe seems to have lost another chick. I could only see 1 adult and 1 noisy chick.
1 adult and 1 imm Little Grebe (the other could be hiding)
1 Cormorant

The undoubted highlight was the tarmac work party filling in the pot-holes on the descent to Bottoms Bridge.

Surprise today were 2 juvenile Little Grebes with 1 adult nearby
Only 1 adult Great Crested Grebe with the 2 juvs but the other could have been hiding somewhere
1 Kingfisher zipped through

First visit for a while

3 Dipper under Bottoms Bridge, 2 spent a couple of minutes mobbing the 3rd before taking off upstream.
1 Dipper later seen further upstream past the Packhorse bridge.
Pair of Great Crested Grebes with 2 humbug youngsters - 1 adult paired up with 1 juvenile on different parts of the lake, both juveniles making quite a noise.
1 Kingfisher flew beneath the Packhorse bridge heading downstream.
Total of 5 Grey Wagtail (3 & 2) seen at 2 locations.
Female Sparrowhawk over the Railway bridge
Buzzard over Windybottom farm
25 - 30 House Martins, 4 Swallow & a lone Swift

52 Coot in total (37 adult and 15 juv). 3 Adults were sitting on new nests
17 Moorhens (5 adult and 12 juv)
4 Great Crested Grebes (2 adult and 2 juv)
