Just been going through my notes from todays trip to the Forest of Bowland and looked again at a siting we had:-
Big bird - buzzard sized hanging in the air with dangling legs - soaring on flat wings (unlike Common Buzzard). Viewed through scope as distant. Five fingers to wing tips. No colour/markings visible to start with except appearance of white underwing patches since light was all wrong. At the time we thought it was probably a Common Buzzard because we couldn't decide otherwise - but could it have been Rough legged? Seems unlikekly but comments would be appreciated. I saw a Rough legged in January at Inner Marsh Farm but June in UK? Couldn't see any white tail markings but was generally pale beneath when it dropped below the skyline to slightly better light.
Of couse if anyone is going up there this weekend keep an eye to the sky over the first fell to the left at the start of the walk.
