Well if that isn't the final nail in the coffin it's certainly the varnish on the lid
got off the train at greenfield (on my way to dovestones) and decide to have a little walk along the river tame from chew valley rd, only got to where the river comes to a t junction & had 6 dipper sightings, although i think 2 came back on them selves so probably only 4. but still good to see, also had... 1 grey wagtail, 2 grey herons, 1 treecreeper, 1 great spotted woodpecker.
80 Mallard (biggest count here for some time - displaced from frozen canal) 71 Black-headed Gulls 8 Canada Geese 2 Moorhen 2 Coot 1 Little Grebe 1 Heron
Yesterday's Male Tufted has gone to be replaced by a second Coot.
52 Mallard (big count for here - displaced from frozen canal) 35 Black-headed Gulls 23 Canada Geese 2 Moorhen 1 Cormorant
and that was it - no Little Grebes of Coot
On the way home saw a Kingfisher dive into the frozen canal - it had found a slushy hole in the ice, but from where I was looking it seemed like a suicide bid!
4 goosanders over greenfield train station at 8.05am heading east, just as i was starting my trek to castleshaw res, also good numbers off bullfinches along ladcastle road, towards uppermill + 2 goldcrests, 1 sparrowhawk.
Something I forgot to add to this morning's post. Was reminded by Karen's observation at Etherow.
Pair of Dippers (one colour-ringed) on Chew Brook were also indulging in courtship behaviour and investigating a regular nest site. It's still November
Following Steve Atkins' reports of an influx of ducks at Watergrove, thought I'd check out Royal George lodge: not a single bird of any type on the water
Hope things improve for next weekend's WeBS count!
Local fields held over 300 Canada Geese with a couple of Embdens and a Greylag/Canada hybrid. Cormorant overhead and a Kingfisher on the river.
Both Cuckoo still present late afternoon/early evening. One seen very well in flight and perched on dry stone wall at the end of Intake Lane (left hand track).
cuckoo! heard late morning up friezland lane and excellent views on trees and pylons calling seen 1-2pm. Exact location -bear right up friezland lane onto intake lane Also several whitethroat seen

Now you've got it Stuart......... been in both those establishments many times. Don't know where squash club is............. sounds a place to avoid. Makes me tired just thinking about it.
Roger.

first willow warbler of the yearnear chew valley squash club also dipper on chew brook .sorry i mean around 150/200 yards away from the wellie or half a mile from the king bill
Don't blame yourself for this Steve......... Stuarts at fault here for confusing us with red-herrings such as "co-ops" and "chemists"......... if he had just said " facing front of t' King Bill" we would have known in a milli-second.
Roger.
You're not wrong there, Roger
From now on all directions to birds must be given from the nearest licensed premises
April 1st 11.30 hrs.
Rooks. Just a quick stop to have a peep, birds sat tight in the rain.
"Sorry Stuart, I'm an idiot and didn't read your previous post properly I was looking behind the main Co-op not the chemists." Steve.

2 chiff chaff , 2 nuthatch ,1 vocal green woodpecker (only heard),1 dipper and a few red grouse calling above dovestones and all the usual on a long circuit of greenfield this morning
I had thought of the same possibility, Mike. Don't know anywhere else around here that they breed (though I've just read the post from Reddish Vale). The Ashton Moss birds seem to stay there all year.
The female Tufty has 5 male admirers today!

I'll have to check and see if any have turned up at Strinesdale. They seem to disappear over the winter. I've never been sure if they die off in the cold and are replaced or move somewhere else, like the white goose did. Of course, if there are any it won't prove they've been hob-nobing with Steve's Brambling

Fri 25.3.11:
Heronry now has a minimum of 7 occupied nests.
Stuart's rookery: 4th nest being built
Green Woodpecker very vocal in ETW
Royal George Lodge:
Tufties now 3m and 1f (had been just a pair earlier in week)
Little Grebes seem to have left (can't have missed them all!)
met a guy who showed me his photo of a Mandarin drake on Manns pond a couple of weeks back - we all seem to have missed it...
Steve
While out running this evening (~1850), an owl flew across Oldham Road in front of me and into trees, just above Greenfield station. Presume it was a tawny, but only got a flashing view of it. Great stuff - made the run an enjoyable experience

20.3.11: short walk around Friezland area this morning.
main purpose to count heronry. Seems much reduced this year - only 4 definitely occupied nests. Many of the older nests apparently abandoned.
Thought I'd found the first local Chiffchaff of the year until I read Stuart Herring's post under "Saddleworth". There were two at the same spot - one singing, one silent - presumed pair. Looked in vain for Stuart's rookery
Only one (colour-ringed) Dipper - would normally expect 2 or 3 pairs.
Also of note - 2 Nuthatch by horse-schooling area.
09.15-10.45 Royal George Lodge Little grebe 2 Coot 3 Tufted 6m 1f Moorhen 2 Mallard 3 Over road up to sewage works Little grebe 1 Coot 1 Moorhen 3 Grey wag 2 Dipper 1 no rings Grey heron 5 lots of movement Cormorant 4 Mistle thrush 3 Canada 20+ pied wag large numbers
