Best place for Bramblings in Greenfield is the place mentioned by John Spalding: the garden of the old station house at the top of the hill on the path between the bowling green and the bend in the river near the heronry. They can also be seen occasionally by the canal under the trees opposite the new Kingfisher pub.

Best bet by far though is Chew Piece plantation (or the Tree for Life garden) at Dovestones.

Haven't checked the heronry properly yet this year (too busy watching Dippers!) but they are usually building/renovating nests by now. It was very quiet there yesterday morning - but the temperature was -6!

cheers, Steve

A walk around Greenfield this morning produced three brambling, two reed bunting, a flock of about twenty redpoll plus the usual finches around the feeders above the bowling green. There were good numbers of meadow pipits and pied wagtails on the sewage pits. Also had kingfisher, lapwing and cormorant in the valley.

Glad someone else has seen the Brambling near the sewage works - I've noted one or two most years and actually noted a pair displaying last April (they must pair up before migrating north).

Good to see you on the forum John - have heard about you from Kath Butterworth - might bump into you sometime on our shared "patch"

Steve

A walk around Greenfield sewage works this morning. Five goosander and a dipper on the river. A mixed flock around the feeders above the bowling green included a couple of bullfinch, a few redpoll and a nice male brambling. A walk in the afternoon to Dovestones produced plenty of fieldfare and redwing, a stonechat and a green woodpecker.
