Anyone else having problems viewing some of the threads with lots of pages? Trying to access the Pennington Flash thread and can only get a (the first ever?) page from 2007. Ditto for the Horwich moors thread.

Out of curiosity, I am wondering if the question marks that replace punctuation on the attached screenshot is what this latest discussion is about. I only ever see these on a few certain posts myself on the mobile version only.

Personally I haven't had any issues myself on my Android divice only with reading a couple of posts from certain individuals. I've never thought much of it and assumed it was when the software installed on devices doesn't recognise certain marks and symbols.

Just noticed the same happening to my posts from my iPhone 6 and iPad air, both running the latest iOS software release.

It's mildly irritating rather than being an actual problem, as Dave says

Dave I'm still on IOS 10.3.3 as I've still got my iPhone 5c, admittedly sometimes I have a few issues with it and I need a new one, but as far as grammar functions on the keyboard in this IOS and posting on the forum goes (or typing anything on any other websites for that matter) then I haven't had any problems or issues.
I would've thought the older phones and IOS running speed would've caused more problems if there were any in all honesty.

The 5 vowels and a handful of consonants produce the accents, umlauts, circumflexes etc if you hold that particular letter, they've been like that for years and are meant to represent what is used in other common languages, inc French, German, etc.

Hope this helps mate

An online search showed that there seem to be issues with apostrophes and iOS 11, for reasons thought to relate to code, which i would never begin to understand.

I hadn't noticed that the touch keyboard now shows an accent to the right of the exclamation mark, not an apostrophe. Sure it wasn't like that before. Anyhow, it you hold on that key for a second, it brings up the option of a few different marks including an apostrophe '

I can sleep tonight night now knowing that

I've just tried with my Samsung S3 and the full website works OK. When I go into the forum area, the screen changes to "Active Board Mobile". I can navigate through all the forums but the icons on the left at each forum heading don't show. I should add, this is when connecting via wifi.

Thanks for that Dean but that still doesn't work for me.

Only change I've noticed on my Blackberry is that I can't scroll using the tracker ball. I have to click at the side like a windows page. Don't know if that constitutes a problem, but it has certainly only changed in the last day or two.

Just wondering if anyone else is having problems viewing the full version of the forum on an android phone over the last couple of days? Have already discussed this with Ian, so if anyone has been having difficultes, could you please let him know to see if anything can be done to rectify it or whether it's just me and my phone having a funny turn.

Regards,

Bill.

I have been given my own custom URL for the forum and have not yet updated the link on the website, because I only found out tonight and I'm at work until 9am tomorrow morning

The idea is (apparently) that you can use either the mobile 'look' or the full site. Personally the old, full look wins hands down for me.

Ok, here's what's just happened on my phone. I accessed via the activeboard link that Ian posted. I got on The forum but the layout was different. I clicked on The menu button, top right. Then clicked on The main site button , then the forum link. The forum appeared as it always had. When I then tried going back to my original manc birding link, all was back to normal. I tried all this before and got nowhere. So the answer is clearly the active board link.

That works on mine Ian, thanks. The layout is totally different but I can view the posts. I'm posting this on my phone. Still can't weigh up why I can't get on The forum from the main website.

Try accessing via www.manchesterbirding.activeboard.com

As for the stickies Paul, they've been up there for a long time and are there out of necessity. Sure, I'd like fewer but if they're not there the forum would be chaos. If you don't believe me check out most other forums . I can't please everyone all the time. Many, like me, believe they are necessary and probably many like yourself think not.

I'm still having problems and like Simon I'm only getting the Sparklit home page. I've messed about with my phone that much that I have had to do a factory reset and now I still can not get on the forum or make calls. Its going back to Vodafone tomorrow.

I would be better off with 2 old bean tins and a very long piece of string

Yes. I've tried that and it still won't work. Not very good is it? My website transferred ok to a mobile version - and I didn't have to do anything.

Actually, just managed to get it working. The address of the site now starts with 96752.activeboard... it didn't used to have that. I went in via a link from an email and that seemed to solve the problem!

One annoying thing though - there are too many Sticky's at the top!

I think the operating system is Symbian....if that helps?

All sorted now, finally!

The forum hosting company have been rolling out a mobile versions of their forums, of which Manchester Birding forum is one. Unfortunately, they had been experiencing problems with cookies and that had been causing the problems. It appears to be all sorted now and I have set the forum to display the mobile version as its default (for mobile phone users) but if you're like me and like the full fat version better then it's easy to disable the mobile one via the menu.

To their credit, they're always trying to improve and add to what I pay for which is fair enough.

Apologies for the delay in getting it up and running but I hope it all adds to the Manchester Birding 'experience'

I have discovered that it works if you follow a link to a thread that you've subscribed to. I get email notifications if anyone posts to the Elton thread and when I open the email notification on my iPhone and click on the link, it works fine. Looks great!

Sounds right that Paul. Im using a android based smart phone and it is autodetecting and showing the same lesser format. New technology ey. Ever get the feeling were all stuck in our ways and fear change? The newer phone format could be a good thing for our phones. It would work quicker with less info to download. It does look funny when you first see it. I dont think it is a problem but more an upgrade. Looks like this could be the new way.

I think it's an issue with smartphones. When you access the internet via a smartphone, the web site identifies the device as a smartphone and, if available, delivers a different format of pages - more suitable to the device. Obviously, this is not happening properly.

When it is working properly, it should make the forum pages look and work better on smartphones. it will probably strip out all the stuff you get on the normal web pages that you don't really need to see - e.g. top banner and menu, bottom menu, number of posts, last post etc. It will look more like an application rather than a web site.

Nope! Clicking any link on the odd looking forum takes me (and many others) directly to Sparklit's webiste (the forum hosting company)?

Roll on getting it resolved tomorrow!

Nope, it is indeed a forum problem and it's annoying the hell out of me as I view from my phone most of the time and having been in work all day today (and yesterday) I haven't been able to take a look at it.

It is in the hands of the forum hosting company and should be resolved by tomorrow.

Dear dear gentleman, having trouble with your all singing all dancing phones, us lesser mortals who still use pen and paper, take note of whats about, then check the computer later:big grin:

And surly its a phone problem, not the forum, hope the toys get fixed soon.
