2 1st winter Common Gulls 2 ad LBB Gulls flying around over lake
OKay where were they hiding?! I stood there for ages going through those bloomin gulls & also trying to find any herons. Glad I found the gadwall Shame we missed each other Rae
WEBS counts 10/10/10 11.30-12.20am beautiful sunny day Boating lake black headed gull 120 canada geese 79, hybrid 1 Mallard 15, hybrid 1 greylag 1 tufted 19 coot 7 embden 1 (youngester is hanging with canada geese)
Chadkirk lake fishing club doing great job of replanting all sides & duck island seems to have a decent sized duck house now! Think they have disturbed the normal group of canada geese/embden on to main lake (watched them land before). canada geese 12 Mallard 12, hybrid 1 emden 4 coot 2 gadwall 1 (male) I love spotting these hiden amongst the mallards
Duck pond Mallard 109 hybrid 3 embden 1 plus grey wagtail fltiing along the feeder stream.
Listing from WEBS count on Sunday 19th Sept 2010, 9.45-11.00am Also, met fishing club members who have done a great job this year working on chadkirk lake: diggers reshaping banks, making fishing areas, moving bullrushes to encourage fish and planning on putting bird nesting boxes up on island. Also reported that some have seen a kingfisher but a bit elusive. Going to restock lake & don't mind sharing with the herons Really friendly people with a passion to getting the best for chadkirk lake & encouraging wildlife. They plan to set up introductory sessions to fishing using their gear too (once per month). Boating Lake 41 Canada geese, 2 hybrids 1 greylag 35 mallard, 1 hybrid 4 tufted 15 coots 2 grey heron 2 pochard 5 black headed gulls
Drake Mandarin in moult on the lowest of the three water bodies here.
2 Nuthatch in the Dingle - even though it is getting late for proving breeding for this species I got a little excited when I watched one carrying food! - what appeared to be a seed or small nut. However, it proceeded to bury this item of food in a large area of moss growing on an oak tree. Watched it do the same thing again a few minutes later - wasn't aware until today that this species cached food!
Also c215 Mallard, c145 Feral Pigeon, c130 Canada Goose, 1 Greylag Goose, 6 Embden Geese and 13 Tufted Duck - inc possible juveniles. 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Swallow and 1 Sand Martin.
I have only heard this once where jays were making buzzard type calls and that was at the beginning of April. Breeding calls sounds like a good theory.
2 Jays giving Buzzard like calls. I looked through my old notebooks and computer records to see when I had last heard these type of calls before and they were at Clayton Vale on 12/4/09 and Harpurhey Ponds on 5/4/09. I can't recall hearing this species giving these Buzzard type calls at any other times of the year - so maybe they just have something to do with courtship etc?
Also 2 Coal Tits calling, 1 Goldcrest singing, 1 Nuthatch singing, 19 Tufted Duck, 2 singing Chiffchaff and a flock of c35 finches feeding on alder cones was very roughly split between equal numbers of Lesser Redpoll and Goldfinch. 9 singing/displaying Dunnocks and 4 singing Wrens as well. 1 Grey Heron. 3 Song Thrush - 2 of which were singing. Quite a noisy morning!
Cheers,
Bill.
