Very muddy Dingle walk with kids 9.30-10.15am Dipper on pool (with ornamental circular concrete thingy!), fed for ages then flew down the stream (later found on rock). Didn't realise they had quite a melodic song.
WeBS count 13/9/15 9.30-10.40am Really enjoyed first count of season. Kingfisher came and landed on post just 4 foot away from me, dripping wet through then on the way back it flew over and landed on concrete bank by boating shed (about 15 feet away) and sat watching me- made my day. Main lake: 31 mallard 1 gadwall 21 canada geese 34 coot 4 mute swans 1 kingfisher 3 moorhen 14 tufted ducks 2 great crested grebes 1 grey heron 1 cormorant 10 black headed gulls 1 kestrel
3rd August 11.40-12.50pm walk around both lakes: Little egret - at bottom of chadwick dam, flew off to main lake as I approached (got poor photo), couldn't find on main lake. First for me in Manchester area.
Also, all the following with young: tufted ducks, mallards, coot & canada geese, plus 2 mute swans with 2 cygnets still. Also, grey wagtail, embden geese, moorhens, greylag goose, swallows & sand martins.
10/5/15 9.15-11.15am A walk around both lakes: first swifts of the year swallows sand martins grey herons, canada geese (2 with chicks) mallards, tufted ducks coots (with chicks) moorhens embden geese, kingfisher pied wagtail jackdaws carrion crows jays blackbirds magpies long tailed tits blue tits great tits house sparrows wrens robins black headed gulls wood pigeons
Walk around both lakes, not counted but this was what was about: 5 mute swans, Grey herons, Mallards- 1 with 9+ ducklings (1st of year for me) Canada geese coot moorhen tufted ducks Pair of greylag geese landed: not usually there (regular greylag on Chadwick) embden geese bullfinch pair blue tits great tits robin crow grey wagtail magpie dunnock blackbird woodpigeon jackdaw wren

It was a drake too, I usually see a mandarin drake once/twice per year on WEBS counts there but never stays more than around a month
We wondered whether the Mandarin spotted around Stalybridge and Ashton is a single, mobile individual, but this morning I saw the drake that has been at Walkerwood all week, and it was still there at 9.30 when I left, so there must be at least two
WEBS count 9.40-10.40am Overall 65% ice and poor visibility (fog) particularly on boating lake as the only ice-free water was around back and fog to dense there. Boating Lake 2 goosanders 1 juvenile mute swan 22 tufted ducks 10 canada geese 4 mallard 2 cormorant 2 grey heron 2 moorhen 7 coot 11 black headed gulls
2 gadwalls seen, both male (1 on chadwick, 1 on duck pond), possible it flew over but second time one has been on duck pond and not much time between two places.
1 gadwall 1 greylag goose 25 canada geese, 2 hybrid 13 coot 6 moorhen 3 tufted ducks 3 black headed gulls 15 mallard 4 embden geese, 1 hybrid and 2nd kingfisher (joined first one from other lake) YAHH!!! (oh they made me late!)
Gadwall - resident bird in eclipse plumage on the duck pond Nuthatch calling from within the park Mallard with two of her own offspring and Tufted duckling on Chadwick Dam Bullfinch (heard) 2+ House Martin
Upper lake (Chadkirk?): Tufted Duck doing well - 1 female with 9 very small chicks, another with 5 well-grown ducklings, and 3 other small Tufted chicks which seem to have been adopted by a Mallard
Coot, Canada Geese and Mallard all with growing families and also a juv Black-headed Gull.
A few Sand Martins about and a Chiffchaff singing almost continuously despite the heat
Noted today around Boating Lake & Chadwick Dam area at around 15:00; Goldfinch - 14, Bullfinch - 2 (M&F), Great Tit - 1, Blue Tit - 1, Long Tail Tit - 4, Little Grebe - 1, House Sparrow - 4, Common Gull - 1, plus the usuals
9.50-10.40 Main boating lake, 15% frozen towards back 22 coot 1 moorhen 12 tufted duck 10 mallard 1 little grebe 43 canada goose, 1 hybrid 4 grey heron (1 flew over to Chadkirk) 3 cormorant (fishermen will love that!) 2 blach headed gulls 1 common gull
21/11/12 - Blackbird, Carrion Crow, Magpie, Tufted Duck 12, Coot 3, Mallard 26 (+ 1 hybrid ), Canada Goose 3, Domestic Goose 2, Blue Tit, Moorhen, Gadwall, Black-headed Gull 2 - these all on back pond. Additions on main boating lake were lots more Canadas, 1 Greylag Goose and a Grey Heron in trees. Also had Goldcrest in Stamford Park.
I was thinking the same about the gadwall- how long do they live for? He was missing from the back lake when it was frozen last week, then I found him on the small duck pond. Rather fond of him Rae
Female Tufted Duck with 4 small ducklings Many thanks to Rob, the fishing balliff, for taking the time and effort to text me on 3rd with this info. Came up on 3rd but couldn't see them but had nice views of this lovely family party this morning. Terrific.
Also Little Grebe on 3rd July and Willow Warblers carrying food on 16th June.
