A pre-roost flock of 30 Greenfinch was good to see today. In trees next to large Laurel bushes, presumably where they would be roosting, between Mab's Cross PrImary School and Tesco car park, from where they were visible.
2 swans flew over Wigan NW train station this morn looked to be dropping down onto the flashes, prob mute swans but would appreciate any news to the contrary, thanks.
4 Whooper Swan went NW over the Wigan Pier area, fairly high, just before 08:30, flying away from the Wigan Flashes area, heading out towards the Douglas valley
A female Great Spotted Woodpecker was feeding in a London Plane at Wigan Pier today, Grey Wagtail also present. George Orwell would have been staggered.
Raven circling King Street-Library Street late morning. Early p.m. 500+ Black-Headed Gull feeding on flying ants just south of town centre, between Saddle Junction and Westwood, 2 Raven south over Saddle Junction
At least 3 young Ravens very close to fledging at nest site at lunchtime. Very active moving around the immediate nest area. Adult came in to feed once while I was there.
Over Scholes early p.m. 2 Raven, being mobbed by a pair of Carrion Crow, then 4 Buzzard soaring and interacting high up. A passing Cormorant appeared to briefly 'mob' the Buzzards
A small area below the nest site has been cordoned off, a few twigs/branches have fallen down, nest site looks safer than last years to me, one of the birds sat in nest early Thursday morning
Ravens nest site no movements today so not sure if they have finished building or not but also still not sure if they will be left alone were the nest is ?
No sign of Ravens at last years site as the site was cleared about 3 weeks ago of old nesting materials not looked properly yet to see were they might be but the site I think they have gone to is a bit open and to me might not last as the ledge might not be wide enough and the owners might deter them for safety reasons.
So until I can find out if this is where they have relocated to we will have to wait and see but just wish they had stayed put.
