14th February.

2nd Winter visit this morning for the TTV for the BTO Atlas project for SD90F (Bardsley). Not exactly ideal weather conditions - frozen ground and water - but didn't dare leave it any longer in case the weather gets even worse again!

Highlights - 2 Goosander on the Medlock and a Green Woodpecker yaffling in the tetrad. 2 pairs of Magpies were nest building and a Nuthatch was seen (by hissing like a cat!! and raising it's wings aggressively) trying to intimidate and frighten off a Blue Tit - surprisingly the Blue Tit stood its ground and the Nuthatch gave up and sheepishly moved off!

Good numbers of Song Thrush and Chaffinch singing.

1800+ Pink-Footed Geese were seen passing over from the area this morning - a fantastic spectacle

(who needs Norfolk!

) but also a considerable distraction during the survey!

Gold Crest - 1 got cracking views of this, i was busy watching the redwings feeding on the berries and it landed about 2 feet away, moved round slowly and stood and watched for about 5 mins before it moved another foot away.

A very enjoyable morning undertaking a TTV (Timed Tetrad Visit) for the 2007 - 2011 BTO Atlas project for tetrad SD90F (Bardsley) - which actually covers the eastern end of Daisy Nook.

39 species recorded in 2 hours, plus an pushy, confident flock of 15 Embden Geese which followed me about for a short while - either they were hoping for some bread or maybe they were just desperate to get included in the Atlas records!

Highlights included - 3 Nuthatch, 1 Treecreeper and a flock of 7 Stock Doves resting in a tree with some Woodpigeons.

A Mistle Thrush was singing

and there were small numbers of Fieldfares seen and large numbers of Redwings present (57 counted in the 2 hours). 42 Robins and 38 Blackbirds were counted in the allocated time span - although these will only be just a fraction of the true count of these species present in this 2km x 2 km square.

Disappointed not to turn up either Dipper or Kingfisher but still there's always next time!

18 Mallards plus 1 female with 3 chicks
5 moorhen
4 coot
26 canada geese
1 mute swan
1 carrion crow
3 magpie
3 woodpigeon
2 blackbird
3 jay
4 blackcap (at least, allowing for not duplicating birds)
1 whitethroat (watched for ages)
2 chiffchaff (1 pretending to be a willow warbler and also not singing or staying still long enough

1 song thrush
Many more singing and darting off before I could negotiate pram & kids!

c55 Siskin - this is the third 50+ flock of this species that I have come across in the last 10 days in different parts of the north-eastern quarter of Greater Manchester (c80 Chadderton Hall Park on 17/1 & c55 Hopwood Woods, Rochdale on 23/1) - so plenty of them about!

But no Lesser Redpoll today

.

Also 3 Nuthatch, 2 Treecreeper and 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker.
