Hi Paul Admittedly Ive only looked at your images on my phone but the raptor looks more like a Peregrine to me. The head pattern looks too strong for Merlin and whilst the tail feathers look damaged, the wingtips stretch beyond the tail whereas in Merlin the tail exceeds the wingtips. In addition the picture showing the bird side by side with a Carrion Crow shows only a small size difference. Anybody else any thoughts?

2W Little Gull flew off NE at 6:05pm with a small group of Black-headed Gulls, presumably to roost at Delph Reservoir.

 

11 Pink-footed Geese flew SW, plus 8 Redwing and a Chiffchaff.

From Fall Birch road 12:30pm to Res.
Kestrel - 2.
Buzzard - 2.
Jay - 1.
Dunnock - 1.

At the Res :-

Pied wagtail - 12 at least.
Reed bunting - 1.
Meadow pipit - 12.
Buzzard - 3 .
Little Grebe - 10.
Little Gull 2W - 1 giving great close up views over the
boathouse path.
But a other birder said the Scaup was scared off by the boats at 12: 45 Doh !

2:15pm - 3:20pm, including a nice bit of hail storm:

  • 8 grey wagtails
  • 80+ pied wagtails
  • 60+ meadow pipits
  • 20 swallows
  • 4 house martins
  • 3 kestrels, a male and two juveniles
  • 14 dabchicks
  • 2nd Winter little gull still
  • 1st Winter scaup still

Also a very close encounter with a female sparrowhawk which put the pipits in a panic about my head and nearly knocked my cap off!
