I was in Manchester about 6.30pm and saw 30-40 Pied Wagtails to-ing and fro-ing between Wetherspoons and Kro in Piccadilly, before they seemed to move elsewhere.
They use the three trees on the corner of Warrington Street near Meeks shoe shop just down from McDonalds. They've been coming since the end of September. You should have seen the droppings the other day.
Pied Wagtails have come back to the roost site at the side of shop Smiths of Wigan at Mesnes Terrace not seen tem this winter approx 70 came out of the roost this morn at 7:55 The unusual thing was that they did not make any sounds at all in the tree but then suddenly came out of the tree in groups of 5+10s calling loudly never seen that before but great to see even though it was still a bit dark.
St. Anne's Square roost building nicely. 5.30-5.45 p.m. C20 on the roof of St. Anne's Church, with similar numbers on St. Anne's House and Kendals, plus about 30 on the roofs around the square.
Also at least 1 Blue Tit and a Peregrine over, heading towards the Beatham
St. Annes' Square roost seems to be starting. There last night around 7 p.m.. Difficult to tell numbers accurately as the trees are still in leaf, but something spooked the birds on the western roofs and between 20 & 30 shot across to the other side.
At least 80 in the roost site off Mesnes Street, Wigan last night - a single tall Cotoneaster sp. next to Smiths Bookshop and Mesnes Terrace mult-storey
I had a fairly substantial roost in a couple of Laurel Trees by the multi-storey car park for Terminal 1 at Manchester Airport on Monday at dusk, probably a couple of hundred but may be many more as most were already in and being noisy!
Tom, Christmas Market now gone from St Annes square, maybe forced off by the huge amout of Pied Wag poo dropping on them, the floor and benches are absolutely plastered with it yesterday.
I counted 580 (a very, very conservative figure) coming into the trees in St.Ann's Square 4.10-4.20pm on Wednesday (19th). They were gathering on McDonald's roof and then flying to the two lit trees above the Christmas market.
sorry judith, most of them were already in the trees when i found them and it was too dark to see in. sounded like they were well into double figures though
