21 Greylag Geese, with one present on the spit and 20 flew in from the west at 08:55

First winter drake Scaup still at the western end

5 Goosanders over east

18 Redwings dropped into the Ramsdales area from the north

38 Fieldfare over south, in flocks of four and 34

5+ Meadow Pipits down on the ruck

Chiffchaff on the ruck with a tit flock

 

Adult Mediterranean gull on Ice in Ramsdales at 12.45 yesterday 7.01.2026 distant record shot below

Also the Tufted Duck Female with the nasal saddle H1 with other ducks by ice in ramsdales ,first seen in the winter of 2017 at the flash

Early afternoon,

Scaup 1 1st win still, off the ruck.

Pochard 35

Pink-footed geese 120 over west.

 

Additional sighting to Colins this am included Chiffchaff in trees by the Golf Course, several hundred Redwing around the site, mainly in hedgerows at the west end. 16 Fieldfare flew north over the west end and a couple of singles mixed in with some of the Redwings. 3 Greylag Geese at the west end, 2 Redpoll in trees near the leaning posts and numerous Siskin at several locations. 12 Meadow pipit in the grass field opposite the sailing club entrance and a Woodcock flew over here just before dawn.

This afternoon up to dusk:

Five Great White Egrets, with four together at the western end, including the red-ringed bird which was fairly furiously chasing the other birds around, also a single on the edge of Ramsdales Reedbed. Later on all five were together at the western end for a while.

First winter drake Scaup still very close to the shore of the car park with Mallards

36 Goldeneye congregating at dusk

4 Great White Egrets including the long-staying red-ringed bird

6 Little Egrets

Usual adult Mediterranean Gull off the car park

26 Great Black-backed Gulls, 23 of which were adults

1160 Herring Gulls

Scaup still present off the car park at 15:00

This mid afternoon up to darkness:

57 Pochard, in East Bay then swam to the off the car park and then back to East Bay once they’d realised the chaos of all the birds being fed off there!

5 Goosander at the western end end

370 Lapwings on the spit

2 Caspian Gulls, with a second winter in briefly before flying off SW at 3:10pm and a fourth calendar year bird in the roost just off Sorrow Cow (photos below, some video on the website)

400 Starling flew over north towards Bickershaw at 3:55pm

• 65+ Pochard off the carpark
• Male Mandarin Duck (with 2 Mallard) in the ditch beyond the hide for the Teal scrape - quite approachable within about 5 meters - see cheap smartphone photo
• Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Coal Tit & Willow Tit all in the trees above the path to Pengy's
• Great White Egret & 2 Little Egrets seen from Ramsdale
• Several Redwing (~10) in berry trees by the canal

Late morning today:

c140 Pink-footed Geese flew in from the NW at 11:45 and appeared to be dropping towards the fields W/SW of Lowton

36 Blackbirds in the hedges around Whittles Fields

2 singing Song Thrushes around Whittles Fields

27 Redwings feeding on Hawthorns around Sorrow Cow Farm, some in (sub)song

1 Nuthatch at Sorrow Cow Pond

1 Cetti’s Warbler calling close to East Bay

8 Siskins feeding in Alders at Sorrow Cow Farm, with a few Goldfinches

Today, Little Egret fishing on Horrocks scrape, first winter drake Scaup from 11:05am to around 11:30, then flushed from East Bay and no further sign by 12:30, 40 Pochard together by the car park, 5 Pink-footed Geese low west at 09:22, 28 Greylags at the west end, 17 Goldeneye. 2 Goosander, a Chiffchaff by Charlie Owen Hide and the adult Mediterranean Gull roosted.

Interesting record yesterday a cormorant with Green Ring 145 was ringed on Puffin Island off NE Anglesey

On the 25th June 2025 as a chicken and yesterday was on the platform right of the spit

At Penny (pic Attached) 1st sighting since being ringed.

Early this morning, c70 Pink-footed Geese over east, 1 Great White Egret, 1 Goosander, 1 Woodcock, 10 Redwing and 2 Buzzards.

60 Pochard, with 54 off the car park, a lone drake in Ramsdales and five others which flew in from the north (probably Bickershaw) to join the main flock at 3:40pm

34 Collared Doves in the Sorrow Cow Farm pre-roost

 

Birds seen this morning included single Great white Egret in Ramsdales, at least 6 Little Egret at various locations, flock of c.20 Siskin at the west end. Drake Mandarin flew from the canal onto the flash, 21 Pink footed Geese west, several Water rail heard and one showing week in front of Pengies hide.

46 Pochard off the car park (including a single female in Ramsdales) but couldn’t see into the East Bay so there could have been more

Adult and second winter Caspian Gulls in the roost (poor video grabs attached, videos on the website)
