Controversial but true!! I totally agree re the diversity of the 2 in comparison with each other. Having done some freelance environmetal consultancy work in the past I have seen it in reality too. The only wee addendum has to be that agricutural or Green Belt land always has the option of management and change, which is usually a harder option on Brown Belt if there are huge areas concreted or tarmacked over. Ancient trees chopped down in the past and concrete laid are impossible/difficult to reverse.

Being an avid local patcher I do feel really sorry for anyone with their patch fully or partially on this Tatton Services site no

Brownfield sites might not always be as aesthetically pleasing as some habitats but they are often oases surrounded by a monoculture of farmland. They can be havens for wildlife, especially for invertebrates and plants. The diversity of a brownfield site is usually far higher than surrounding greenbelt farmland, and they can have species which are rare or unknown elsewhere within a region. This might be a controversial comment, but purely from a diversity point of view, you'd be better building on arable fields than on a brownfield site.

Sadly Johns comment are so true , they will build where they want no matter what protests or petitions are signed ..

A very interesting point Mark Cocker made at the RSPB talk in Bredbury early this year , in that some Brown belts sites now have more wildlife in than Green belts sights , but no matter what the loss of common birds and Habitats is unmistakably the fault of councils and politicians.

Unfotunately like the green belt arable land at silver lane pool junc 11 m62 , there is little care what wildlife is on the site .They will always find a way to build on any land they want to.
