Cheers John, don't the coot know they are protected. It does look the same as the newt in your pic

If you image that there is a tail and a pair of hind legs to the left of the bill, and a head to the right (forelegs obscured), it might be a small Great Crested Newt.

I was wathching the Coot chicks on the nest yesterday when the adult came in with food and passed it to one of the chicks.

Can anyone id the food item, ive been looking at it for ages and cant make it out in the picture attached.
