Living in Culcheth, though, I have mixed feelings. The Culcheth Linear Park is now saved & the revised route is away from the village, reducing noise
If Silver Lane pools are lost (which I think were a mitigation for the landfill), I would expect that something would be constructed nearby to replace them
In the bigger picture, this link route was only intended to provide access to the Golborne depot, which is now moved to Crewe. So why on earth is it now planned to be a major link to Scotland ?? Do Manchester people have a problem getting to Scotland ?
Also, and this is well hidden, in section 8.9 and 8.10 of the report: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/568208/high-speed-two-crewe-manchester-west-midlands-leeds-web-version.pdf
"NPR aspirations for better services between Liverpool and Manchester could be met with a range of options. These options include new lines and upgrading existing lines. TfN has examined two options that make use of HS2 to connect Manchester and Liverpool. Both options involve construction of a new line to Liverpool, and a junction onto the HS2 route. Under these options it would be possible to deliver NPR's ambitions for a 30 minute journey between Manchester and Liverpool, connecting the cities via Manchester Airport.
"We will continue to work with TfN to plan how HS2 may best complement the development of future NPR services into and through Manchester, including through the provision of an integrated station solution"
This extra proposal will not go through Warrington (I don't see how you could do it in 30 mins), so there will be an environmental impact somewhere nearby
Some good news regarding HS2 and the future of Lightshaw as the original plans have now been re-routed slightly further west of Lightshaw Hall and the maintenance sheds have now been relocated to Crewe, so neither impacts on the flash and its immediate surrounding area.
Info thanks to Judith Smith
On a more sour note though, the plans don't look as positive for Silver Lane Pools.
My initial Post on this subject has disappeared,???? if you wish to read more about the effects HS2 will have on Lowton and particular SSSI Abram Flashes, Lightshaw Meadow, and various grade A - SBI areas take a look at www.leighos.org.uk You can view and download the Society formal response to HS2

Because a link had been inserted the forum immediately quarantines it as potential spam (of which I've been having lots of recent problems with) but I originally thought I'd approved the post the it disappeared? Anyway, it's back now.

The route of HS2 through this area terminates at Lightshaw with a through-line joining the West Coast Main Line (WCML) just south of Dover Lock. On the south side of the through line at Lightshaw there will be a rolling stock depot 2.5km long and at least 175m wide which will cut through the garden of Byrom Hall and leave Lightshaw Hall marooned in a car park within the depot.
The through-line will pass just 70m away from the main waterbody in the Lightshaw Meadows Nature Reserve. Lightshaw Lane and part of the reserve will be obliterated. The Society cannot stand by and let this happen. A covering letter signed by David Shallcross accompanied the response attached to this e-mail which went to HS2.
Also attached herewith is a sketch map of the location of the depot, through-line and designated sites at Lightshaw so that you can see what is proposed. I have liaised extensively with local residents groups and they have also seen our response. Local residents with British Rail experience and with economics knowledge have individually set out very persuasive cases which propose that HS2 goes through Warrington instead and that the financial case for the Golborne spur from the Ship Canal is badly flawed and would make a loss.

There is a consultation response document available, but it covers quite a lot of things outside our area and interests.
