RE: Pole Bank Wood/Tame Valley

A pleasant hour or so spent at Pole Bank Wood this afternoon.

Two Ring-necked Parakeet flew through the wood towards the buildings. A first sighting for me here.
Three Mallard on the duck pond (two drake)
Two Canada Geese
Moorhen
Five Chiffchaff singing between the formal gardens and the bridge
Three Blackcap singing on the woodland edges
At least four Nuthatch around the area
Two pairs of Long-tailed Tit
Bullfinch (heard only)
Plus plenty of other birdsong

Just a shame that there seemed to be a lot of scrambler bikes near the canal judging from the noise near the bridge.

Sorry just seen this; not been on for a couple of days.

If you walk around the pond to the left there's a path covered in leaves. Follow the path and you'll see where I've set up a feeding station it's usually around this area. You'll here it calling usually early morning. It has been down to the feeder so it might be worth taking a supply of nuts/suet.

I would like to see the lesser spotted woodpeckers at this location.I looked two weeks ago and just saw a great spotted woodpecker.Whereabouts can they be seen?i.e near the ornamental pond or by the stream going downhill to the Tame?Which side?Is it possible to meet up?Best wishes Bill

1 Lesser Spotted Woodpecker in the same area (I think I heard two calling again). I've managed to record the call on my phone today. It was there in the morning and early afternoon.
1 female Great Spotted Woodpecker calling for at least 30 minutes from the top of a poplar.
6 Nuthatch
Numerous Goldcrest
3 Treecreeper
4 Bullfinch (2m and 2f)
20 Long-tailed tit on the feeders

Only had half an hour before going shopping today.

Lesser Spotted heard in same area at 9:30. Another bird seemed to be calling close by and the male calling back. They weren't exactly the same call but the same pitch.
Treecreeper
Goldcrest
Chaffinch
Robin
Wren
Flock of Blue, Coal, Great tit

A lot of birds calling around the feeders but unfortunately I didn't have time to stay.

A couple of hours there today.

30+ Goldcrest (I tried to look for firecrest amongst them without any luck)
Lesser Spotted Woodpecker heard and then seen (Male. Wondering if it's possibly the same bird that has been spotted at Reddish Vale)
Great Spotted Woodpecker (Male)
3 Treecreeper
4 Nuthatch
Chaffinch
18 Long-Tailed Tit
Coal Tit, Great Tit, Blue Tit
2 Moorhen
1 Buzzard
6 Redwing

2 Warbler sized birds at the top of a birch tree. Looked cream/white from below no significant markings from below. Short tail with feint barring. Long thin beak. Possibly lesser Redpoll but I'm not sure.

I thought I'd check the area out yesterday as it's just down the road from me. There was lots of activity in the morning but very quiet in the afternoons.

I heard and then saw what I thought was a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. Smaller than the Great Spotted Woodpecker it had white barring on it's back and it's black moustache didn't reach it's nape.

I returned again early today to the same place and heard it calling for an hour. I checked the app on my phone and it sounded identical. I couldn't locate it though! I'm going to try and have another look sometime this week .

Other birds seen today:

6 Redwing
Jay
Robin
Chaffinch
Buzzard
Collared dove
Woodpigeon
2 Moorhen on the grass around the pond which is full of algae!
Blue tit, Great tit, Coal tit
12 Long-tailed tit
3 Treecreeper (closest view I've had of them approximately 2 feet away)
3 Goldcrest
2 Wren
2 Great Spotted woodpecker

The majority of birds didn't stay around for more than a few minutes before moving on.
