Enjoyed watching a couple of piperstrelles hunting around the football fields in the last light day. feeding off the insects that were disturbed while walking, with views down to 2 metres.
A bat was flying past our house in broad day light 1725 today, looked larger than a piperstrelle but could not get a good id, good to see the rise in temperature has ended hibernation.
Hi Dave, agree with you, thats the only conclusion i could come up with . i have heard very aggresive shrew disputes in long grass, but never witnessed it, real surprise to see them in the garden. best wishes Dave.
I have just noticed your post about the two dead Shrews. Some years ago on Astley moss I watched two Shrews fight to the death. It only took about a minute for one shrew to kill the other but the winner only managed to move about 6' from the loser before it too died. Both had suffered tiny bite marks which were hard to see unless very close to. The first had died from a bite to the throat and the second had an injury to the back of its head.
2 Dead shrews on my back lawn 4 feet apart, no visible injuries, never had shrews in the garden before.could be cat prey but as i said no injuries, unlikely to be bird of prey with there being 2 of them. the only reason i can come up with is they were in dispute when the cold got them last night.
