Just got back from two days down here. Though I never made it as far as the sea itself, I had a fabulous birding trip, mainly focusing on the Plym estuary, where a lifer for me was to be had (see list below)
The haul on the Plym included:
20+ Shelduck 3 Little Egrets (a first sighting for me) Waders thin on the ground, it being the summer months, but still I saw a single Oystercatcher and several Curlew. Quite a few Cormorant
Also, in a nature reserve I had an (edit) possible second 'first'- a Nightingale - although not heard singing, just sighted - a rare bird in Plymouth, as Henry above says. I wish possible had been definite, and I wish I had heard it sing now, and because I didn't I've duly edited this to possible and for a few more reasons. There were Song Thrush, Chiffchaffs, Chaffinches and Greenfinch about here too, but I didn't remain all that long, me wanting to head to the sea, and although failing I did well :)
Aside, between the reserve (called Effford Marsh) and the Plym - two Buzzards (over) and a few Blackcap.
