Still at least 6 Brambling in the woods this am feeding on Rowan berries, and 5 Siskin nearby feeding in a Silver Birch. Also about 25 Redwing around the site,a male Sparrowhawk, single Mistle Thrush and 4 Buzzards in the air together.
...and and stating 'in my opinion'...of course the picturesque drive along Holcroft Lane through the ever so pretty DESERT FARMLAND LANDSCAPE brimming with colourful hues of green and TOTALLY DEVOID of birds....how my heart aches at what has been done to our farmland birds in the name of 'CHEAP FOOD'....less we forget NOTHING is CHEAP....for down the line something pays heavily for 'cheap'...
Singing Chiffchaff, not far from entrance Nuthatch Treecreeper Great Spotted Woodpecker heard drumming 4-6 Oystercatchers hurtling around, and over Bents
I too as a young lad nearly 50 years ago spent many hours at this site when it was merely just the main wood & other treeless fields, & the scarcity of birds was just the same then.
My own opinion is that Chat Moss railway is largely to blame as about every 10 minutes a noisy train passes along the southern end of this site & it is well documented that meadow birds such as Skylarks & Meadow Pipit's (which I cannot remember ever seeing at this site), along with some Ducks, Geese & Waders will not tolerate such frequent environmental noise.
However there are the odd other bird species that seem to thrive along the embankments that the railway provides, but surely this railway must have an adverse effect on the diversity of not only birds but other wildlife in this area.
Many---rather too many moons ago...I used to reach this site on a youthful trek through Bedford Moss...it looked ok but alas I never crossed the Barbwire fences to see as it was private ...years later in my cycle everywhere on the Moss era when the place was taken over by the Forestry Commission I found that it was not necessarily over rich in birds but it did have Siskin and Redpoll in the winter....these seem no longer to visit...ok Nuthatch has been gained...but it now seems even more devoid of life....other than as in the Gogol Novel...full of 'Dead Souls' looking to escape C19....nature has a way to fight back...it may be that it awaits the fate of the Dinosaur to visit its least friendly occupants of the planet....lets hope that this is both avoided and that we can once more be a 'friend' of nature....for ALL of our benefit...
Dave is bemoaning the fact that this area is poor on wildlife, and I have to agree with him. The whole area looks superb with it's different range of habitats, but every time I've visited the site I've come away very disappointed. For some reason it's always had a lack of wildlife,I used to go down regularly before this pandemic, mainly because it was hardly used then, and I could walk the dog without seeing another person. It can't be disturbance that's caused this dearth of wildlife as it's always been the same, very puzzling. !!!
Afternoon wander...in a way this 'nice' site in its Woodland setting to me sums up the now obvious lack of wildlife in our 'countryside'...yes I am aware of the fact that this is 'woodland' in winter...hence one is to expect a less active spread of birds...yet nonetheless HOW my wandering's about the site seem to underline the LACK of birdlife...yes .it seems to suit the Dog Walkers (there is such 'quality in the variation of the piles of their pets excrement deposited about the site) and others who simply wish to wander in an open air arena...but for those of us who hope that wildlife will continue to persist in the lives of ALL...to me this Forestry Commission site sums up perhaps quite 'clearly' indicates that this will NOT be so...
18 Teal...flushed off the Glaze due to the reverberating thunder from the 12 bore guns from some some nearby ('bores') BIG GAME HUNTERS...such masculinity (!) displayed by these 'brave warriors' pitting their hand against such fearsome quarry as Woodpigeon.....and in letting their bloodlust flow they were disturbing all and sundry in the world of wildlife which at such times of harsh weather have enough on their plate pitting themselves against nature...never mind the de-natured....
