I live in Hazel Grove which lies within the 10k square SJ98 and this square covers 3 counties, Cheshire, Derbyshire and Greater Manchester. The major problem is that it doesn't include any decent water body so ducks, for example Ruddy Duck, Goldeneye, and Gadwall, remain extreme rarities. Even Pochard and Shoveler are relatively uncommon, as are waders.
This year a dedicated group have been working this patch thoroughly and, as a few of you already know I have been trying to see how many birds I can find in this square - but by foot or bike from home. There's only one rule - use any petrol and it doesn't count! The spin-off was I was supposed to get a little fitter as well. (I've cycled 716 miles this year but not travelled more than 5 miles from home, as the crow flies).
Well, my 2008 total now stands at 114 and includes many goodies. My personal highlights were finding a Green-winged Teal, passage Green Sandpiper and Little-ringed Plovers plus a small flock of Waxwings. But confiding Hawfinches were spectacular and a recent Snow Bunting was the first recorded in the square since January 1902. The latter two turned up in Cheshire though and I didn't find either, unfortunately.
I found a further 2 species by car, Osprey and Jack Snipe, and missed another 10 so the possible year total was 126. It just shows what is lurking on our doorsteps.
Oh well best get on, only 2 days to go and Water Rail and Crossbill are out there somewhere!
