A Little Egret just flew north-east over my garden at 6pm, a much awaited first for here! Also, male Linnet still around, the male Whitethoat still busy singing practically all day, including from the garden itself and a pair of Oystercatchers over.
On and around my Stretford Backyard feeders this morning were...
Goldfinch - 5 including the first newly fledged youngster I've seen up to now. Blackbird - 2 (1 adult male and 1 juvenile). And quite a few feral pigeon under the feeders. Also yesterday a Greenfinch was seen which are usually few and far between. No sign of the usual Blue- tits with young this year I'm sorry to say.
Bury . House sparrows are scarce hereabouts . But , after thirty years seeing none , the adults have brought three fledglings to feed on the sunflower hearts . Lovely to hear happy , chirping sparrers !
Hungry , noisy jackdaw nestlings in the ivy of a sycamore . First , for this ! Hooray ! I boarded up the front of the open great tit nest box , which had been raided by what we thought was magpies . Now the entrance is too small for predators , but good size for the adults . Chicks are thriving .
A common tern is a nice new addition to my flixton garden as it flew low over at 9.10am this morning. A rook has been coming into my garden recently, normally they are just flying over or on the roof tops. Whitethroat & blackcap have been distantly heard in the nearby fields.
Squirrels have raided the great tits nest . Amazingly, there are still two chicks present . Just over the wall, a fledged rook , well-formed , lies dead on the ground . An adult has been pulling it and pecking at it as if trying to awaken it .
A nice evening in my Astley garden today, the highlight of which was a fantastic Hobby which flew low north directly over at 8:23pm. The male Whitethroat has been singing all day, including actually in the garden, the male Linnet was sat at the top of the Hawthorns at the back of the garden for a good ten minutes this evening (while I was having my tea watching it!), I only hope the female is now on eggs somewhere in the hedgerows. At least two House Martins and four screaming Swifts around the house too.
Two or three pairs of bullfinch in residence , as usual . Interesting to see , for the first time , a male taking seeds from the forget-me-knots . Nice change from the sunflower hearts , i suppose . No willow warblers this year .
Just watching a Buzzard thermalling about over the back garden when an HOBBY flew right past it and circled on the same thermal for a few seconds before powering off north.
290425 Garden Watch which started @ 0745 and ran intermittently until 1730...Irlam south
All 31 species noted below...
2 Robin
4 Carrion Crow
2 House Sparrow
2 Great Tit
2 Blackbird...a pair which spent quite a while trying to distract a local cat from taking their young (nest not in my garden) why oh why can't Cat owners keep their pets indoors in the daytime in the breeding season???
4 Greenfinch...1 in display flight
11 Goldfinch
7 Woodpigeon
1 Dunnock
2 Long-Tailed Tit
1 Swallow
1 Buzzard
1 Grey wagtail
6 Feral Pigeon
6 Lesser Black-Backed Gull
1 Chiffchaff...in song nearby
1 Collared Dove in display flight
4 Starling (really??? they used to be counted in their 10's at this time of the year around our estate)
I was mothing at 12:10am when I clearly heard a Cuckoo call twice. It wasn't close, but it was otherwise very quiet and still. I presume it was on passage.
Bury . Chiffchaff and blackcap singing , not seen . Awaiting willow warbler . Alas , the very oft-visiting sparrowhawk and great spotted woodpecker not seen for two weeks . Could this mean they are on territory elsewhere ? Any ideas , please !
A Blackcap singing in next doors garden in their blossom tree and another one singing back at it from the trees on the green in front of our house.
Chiffchaff still singing nearby as well.
A male Pheasant wandering round back garden just now. Also a singing Blackcap and Chiffchaff from bottom of garden and a singing Willow Warbler from front of house on the village green opposite.

Since our return from Malta our Blackcaps have left our Stockport garden.
An interesting encounter for Cath yesterday was a bird call from the magnolia in the garden she grabbed her phone and got onto the Merlin app and it showed as a Ring Ouzel, looking into the tree she saw a dark Blackbird shape but the sun was in her eyes and then it was gone....
Over the years we have had Ring Ouzel at Crowden so she has an ear but was suprised by the call in our urban garden.
Just been watching a pure white finch type bird feeding on dropped seed in the back garden. Don't know if it's an escaped cage bird or just an albino finch sp. Poor photo as I just took it through my phone.

About 60 Redwing sat in trees at bottom of the garden,a lot in sub song.
2 Nuthatch on the feeders, the Stock Dove back in again and a Buzzard right over the garden low down.
In our Stockport garden the female Blackcap is still a regular every day since our last post, she has now been joined by a male most of this week. Blackbird numbers are still in double figures just (10) plus the usuals.
