Late morning walk, 29 species, of note: 4 8m x 8m artificial islands installed on the reserve, 2 on no. 8, 1 each on 9a and 9b filter beds. Being used by wildfowl. Mink x 1, on the river with an eel, Bulllfinch x 6, Blackcap x 2, Chiffchaff x 1, Tufted Duck with 6 ducklings, Mallard x 20 plus 5 broods of 9, 6, 4, 3 & 2, Teal x 3, Gadwall x 2, Pied Wagtail with 2 juveniles, Grey Wagtail juvenile. Little Grebe x 6

Just south of the reserve, 11 Little Egret around mid-day, around a flood in the usual horse paddocks alongside the A580, just west of the Greyhound roundabout. Good opportunity to view them through my bins as I sat queuing for the roundabout, as half of the population of the North-West seemed to be heading for Bents

Very quiet this early afternoon, only highlights of a Little Egret roosting in a tree on the island on the Main Lake and two Chiffchaffs in a roaming tit flock which also contained a few Goldcrests and two Treecreepers.

Great White Egret flew west over East Lancs Road about quarter mile east of Hope Carr heading in that direction (or Pennington) at 6.30pm tonight

This afternoon:

Main lake: 2 mute swans, 2 canada geese, 2m 1f tufted duck, oystercatcher heard overhead flying east

Settling bed 2/3: kestrel hunting overhead

Settling bed 8: 6f 5m 1 juv tufted duck, shoveler pair, F mallard, moorhen, juv coot, Cettis warbler heard

Settling bed 9b: coot pair with 1 juv, little grebe pair

Settling bed 16a: coot

 

First visit to this site - I would have loved to have seen it 15-20 years ago!
