Last weekend it was a pleasure to help ring/monitor the breeding Barn Owls on Astley Moss under a Schedule 1 licence issued by the BTO. It seems as though the owls have not had a bad year! In several boxes there were large ''stashes'' of wood mice, shrews etc. At one farm, we were just going into a barn when we heard a racket from outside - sounding like young Kestrels. Looking up it seemed as though they where nesting in an old Magpies nest, A ringing colleague has seen this before. Has anyone else seen Kestrels nesting in a crows/magpies nest? On closer inspection the young where just about ready to leave the nest.
