John, hope the Garganeys are breeding that would be great. Also agree about the Reed Warblers had a cracking view at penny a few weeks ago and yesterday at Doffcocker, saw 2 in full view. Still stuggle with the Sedge/Reed Warbler songs but when you can see them it's easy Earlier all i saw where Sedge now they seem to be mainly Reed.
john,it,s reassurring to see that you,ve got two male garganys at penny,after spending a couple of days chasing them up and down the hey brook corridor in early may,i thought there were two but couldn,t be sure ,hope there,s a fourth female sitting somewhere.
risked the northbank again today 03.06.07-nice kingfisher-3 garganey-2m1f,9 greylags,someone reported a merlin in front of the screen,but i suspect after talking to someone that saw it thet it was a hobby,apparently trying to land on the islands but lapwings kept chasing it ,loads of dragonflies over that area must have been hunting them.
hi dean-went on the north bank friday-it was a nightmare for peoplejust couldn't get any peace anyweresaw the grebes with young.it just seems a recent phenomenom that a lot of adult birds seem not to breed,look at the mute swans at penny 92 mainly adults,not breeding.i think some birds almost regulate themselves,if theres a glut of a species ,others don;t bother to breed.10 years ago great crested grebes seemed to panic into nesting,at houghton green pool no reeds or vegatation at all,one year i had 5 pairs nesting strieght onto the bank.which were never sucsessfull.has the local cattle used the water to drink and used to tread on the eggs by mistake.to me there seems like loads of habitat at penny for them to breed,but not many are bothering.then again i think in the next few weeks ,we will find a few pairs with young coming out of the woodwork.i forgot to mention it looks like 1 pair of common terns are nesting on the raft at the front of teal hidesaw thwm friday one seemed to be sitting.it also seems a bumper year for reed warblers they seem to be everywere,as my picture i sent you last week of one singing in a tree shows.normally you would hear them deep in reeds,but ive seen 3 this year singing in willowskeep up the reports for penny,i can at least see what other people are seeing,when im at work
Hi John, Thought about going to penny today, thought it would be busy so went to Doffcocker instead. There was a pair of Gt Cd Grebe with 2 young so they are breeding. But i agree with you there doesn't seem to be many breeders about. Wonder why that is? Do you think the sudden rise of water level at PF the other week could have washed some nests away and we'll get them a bit later?
