Astley sand quarry lake.
At least 900 ,maybe a 1000 large gulls on the lake, mainly Lesser Black Backs, didn't have scope so couldn't check them out properly.
Also on the lake 100+Canada Geese,at least 20 Greylags and a pair of Shelduck with 8 well grown young.
The missus has heard a Corncrake calling this morning in the field on the rhs from north end of Rindle Road, Astley Moss at approx SJ 70325 98436. No sign of it in last 25 minutes, might be better mid evening for it calling.
....and a brief glimpse of the past as a Pullman Train dashed along the Railway line...recalling that the Turtle Dove/Tree Pipit/Curlew...and more that were here in the sixties are but dust....what have we done....????????
6.25pm probable Quail flushed by mammal in the field outside Astley Moss, along drainage ditch from the hay/silage/grass pile on the path. No sign since, and no call.
