Always tricky dealing with birds with long pointed bills - well done Tom. As for swans, I deal with up to 100 a year, mostly angling-related but a number of relocations where they have crash-landed, or territorial fights. Gary, if you come across any swans in Wigan with problems please ring me on 01942 712615 - I have RSPCA contacts as well with boat if need be. I'v e been doing it 15 years or so and it's very rare that I can't catch them - I have my methods! All sick birds get the best treatment at RSPCA Stapeley Grange.

well done tom hope your pain was worth it anglers should be more carefull and real in when a bird comes near ive seen this happen with a swan and believe me they put up a tremendous fight.
Watching 13 Great Crested Grebes on Arley reservoir, I noticed one appearing to swim backwards, quite fast at that! I then realised it was hooked to an angler's line which it encountered under water. The chap involved who was quite disstressed was trying to reel it in with difficulty, and fortunately another passer by held his rod while I caught the bird and the angler dislodged the hook from its foot. The bird gave a fight calling in a manner similar to its main call and drew blood from my hand. On release swam off seemingly unharmed. That was the only excitement apart from a couple of Swallows and a Kingfisher.
