One of the four Teal was looking a bit lethargic early last week, so kept a check on it. Looked fine later, and now the four have moved to the Sale side. Otherwise, two, probably three Water Rail at Meadow Pond, also two Willow Tit here (one unusually vocal), with possibly an extra bird at the old sludge beds. Casual wanders gave up to seven Goldcrest, half a dozen Bullfinch, male Stonechat, an influx of Siskin which now seem to have moved on, a dozen Redpoll (now moved to the Sale side), a couple of Reed Bunting etc.

Northern Wheatear on the playing field at about 10am; see record shots attached.

Little Egret flew over around 9am, headed towards Sale Water Park.

1 Reed warbler, 3 reed bunting, 2 bullfinch, 2 whitethroat, 2 swallows and a sand martin seen around the reedbed pond yesterday evening. 1 Kestrel hunting over the old 'cow field' and a whitethroat in the bramble scrub.

This evening 19:05-20:10

5x Chiffchaff, 7x Song thrush, 15x Rn parakeet, 1x Rn pheasant, 3x Stock dove, 1x Grey heron, 2x Goosander over, 1x Kingfisher, 2x prob snipe over cow field and 10x Reed bunting in Meadow pond, of which an area of reedbed has been burnt down

Todays walk 17:30-18:50

16x Chiffchaff incl 3 seen well, 13x Greenfinch, 12x Song thrush, 7x Goldcrest, 2x Jay, 10x RN parakeet, 3x Grey wagtail, 2x Sparrowhawk, 21x Mallard, 1x Goosander, 2x Moorhen, 1x Grey heron, 25x Redwing feeding around woodland and 5x Reed bunting (4m 1f) at meadow pond.

Afternoon walk today 1430-1850:

9x Chiffchaff singing incl 2x seen, 3x nuthatch, 2x Sparrowhawk, 2x Cormorant, 5x Grey heron, 4x Grey wagtail, 4x Song thrush, 1x Pheasant, 1x Goosander, 21x Redwing flew east plus 5x in trees opposite side of river and 1x Large raptor prob Harris Hawk

Eight buzzards circling high over the corner of the Ees by Jackson's Boat for about five minutes at 2pm, calling all the while before dispersing in pairs. I assume one of the pairs was the one I saw over Ivy Green about half an hour previously. This isn't a behaviour I've seen before, it looked different to the usual seeing an intruder off the premises.

Chiffchaff - 1 singing and catching flies in a willow tree by Chorlton brook.
Long-tail tit - 4.
Redwing - 3.
Ring- neck parakeet - 4.
Grey Heron - 1.
Wren - 1.
Plus lots of singing Robins everywhere.

Grey Herons are active over the heronry today. Although I didnt see any nests there were at least 7 birds investigating the conifers. The herons got a bit fretful when a buzzard and our (now) local Harris Hawk flew over. Also, a flock of Lesser/Common Redpoll were feeding in the Alders near the car park bridge.

Tawny owl in full view on edge of wood at the cow field, thanks to the noisy blackbirds.
Several snipe heard coming out of cow field.
5 redwings
2 song thrush
2 jays
1 great spotted woodpecker
3 Grey heron
Few siskin over
1 common buzzard
1 Kestrel
8 ring necked parakeets, more heard

Bird activity low at dusk tonight (if you exclude jackdaws and parakeet flocks). Only highlight 3 snipe came up out of the cow field..... And the clear sky gave good views of jupiter and its moons.

2 visits down the Ees today.

Saw the Harris Hawk this morning with its usual escort of crows.

At dusk a male Kestrel was hunting the Cow Field. A bird kicked up in a wet area of the woodland but didn't get a good luck but probably snipe or woodcock.

Had report from a reliable source of Water Rail being heard around the Meadow Pond - but didn't get chance to check myself.

Nice and quite on the meadows this afternoon.

Harris Hawk, 2 Buzzard and a Kestrel over the freshly cut meadow pond field. Also Sparrowhawk (m) over the woods).

Harris Hawk seen on 3 occasions - always being mobbed.
