I don't think Defra need to call in the snipers just yet Mike. It was fairly confiding, so I presume it's a lone bird that was behind bars until very recently
It was about 10:45 i had heard them calling in the distance but could not see them and then into sight flying from the Hindley Prison area there was 4 at first then another 2 which were interacting with each other came past about a minute later all going west . I heard them a bit later but didnt see them so they could have come back the same way but not sure.
Then the Bamfurlong Triangle,it is then i,ll start a thread later after i,ve tried to count the house sparrow,s that thrive in this abbothe swallow family is still around and very showey .
I could hear a Grasshopper Warbler reeling across the canal from Platt Bridge last night, in the "triangle" formed by the canal, the A58 and the West Coast Mainline. Not sure what this area is actually known as, but maybe it could be called Bamfurlong Triangle?
Whoopee,from the garden,a family of swallows buzzing around ,so the nest site can,t be that far awayamusingly the adults reappeared later and 'buzzed' a blackbird from his favourite perch.I,ll be installing some swallow access vents in the garage.
Had good look around the 'village' this afternoon checking out house martin nesting site,s and I,m pretty sure there just arn,t quite as many birds as last year.I looked at the post office and Biccki lane ,abram ect just one,s and two.s.Has anyone else noticed a population decline in their area????
Now then here,s, a thing,not been checking me own doorstep well enough and seem to have let a few tournament points slip through my fingers,whinchat,lesser whitethroat, gargany(2).It seems I might have to start a few more 'scare stories' to keep you foriengners at bay.
Dave,Stratton drive 'coppice'(cos everything deserves a name) falls just outside wigan flashes and outside abram flashes,so boundry bending is required when anything tasty turns up,there,s a private feeding table in one of the gardens and it seems to draw a lot of birds over the railway line,one my first 'finds' was a brambling in the same area,well worth a look if your doing a day on the flashes.
ok i,m in i,ll try to document 'the colony' around abram and platt bridge it,ll probably get done next year because i,ll need to get permisson from the householders involved before i start staring up at their windows.
Yes, they've been on the Lily Lane houses at the lights for 30+ years, also on the (closed) doctor's surgery. There are also some down Warrington Rd in Abram I think. It's a very widespread colony.

judith there is some nesting on buildings near to lily lane t/lights on houses in lily lane and some what looked as if they was on the old doctors surgery i was in traffic so could not get the address properly
But I could only find 2 nests occupied in the complex near the Post Office (over the cycle repair shop) out of 19 nests on that block - unless I was just unlucky?

victoria road house martins,nice bunch of 10 12 birds , looks like two families fledged ,not the best spot for bins or camera but still nice to see in the 'village'
08/04/08 flock of 30 goldfinch in a pre roost gathering around the gardens,and very large bowl of alder seeds on the patio should those mealies of daves fly over.
last night 26/03/08 1 tawny owl calling from the garden @ 3.30 a.m. a new garden tick for me ,wished i,d have stayed up and gone to pennington before work
