I also had a walk in the area From Matchmoor Lane, along Burnt Edge, round the plantation to Holden's Farm and back up to Matchmoor Lane.

Burnt Edge:- 1 Stonechat

Plantation Area:- 2 Stonechats and flock of about 15 meadow pipits

Holdens Farm:- 20+ swallows, about 10 linnets, 2 wheatear, 1 whinchat, 1 whitethroat, 1 great tit, 1 robin, 1 greenfinch, 2 young stonechat.

The farm area seems to be a magnet for bird activity.

I have checked my OS maps and can't find "higher meadows" where the big hedge is, could someone pinpoint it for me please?

Many thanks

Andy V

Could anyone supply me with information on the best sites to see Spotted Flycatchers at the moment.
I've tried Holden's Farm/Burnt Edge area recently but with no success.
Any contributions would be gratefully received

A 3 hour walk round the area this morning, quite a breezy day. Nothing much else to add to the previous posting, saw 4 of the Spotted Flycatchers in the same area, a few Willow Warblers here and there but not great numbers, quite a few (sorry didn't count them ) Meadow Pipits up around 3 Lads and towards the Kennels, at least 4 different Kestrels around but more than likely 6 min.

Highlight of the walk was a covey of around 12 Grey Partridges on the lower path below Burnt Edge about 11.30.

Saturday 21st June

Mid morning walk with wife and camera, through Wilders Wood, where we had heard that crossbills had been seen in the past, and on up the moor.

In the wood,
Chaffinch, song thrush, blackbird, crow, magpie, family of willow warblers, chiffchaff, 3 redpoll, 4 goldcrest, blue tit, coal tit, whitethroat and what I think may have been a grasshopper warbler.
There was a short burst of song then it bounced about the bushes feeding and flew off.

On the moor

2 kestrel, one feeding on it's catch on a dry stone wall. 4 buzzards and innumerable meadow pipits. No wheatear though.
4 swallows feeding over the pond at Pike Cottage on our return.

A very pleasant walk and some good photographs.

How often are crossbills spotted here btw?

A few hours along mast road with a saunter off towards Holdens plantation and Adam Hill. Nothing unusual, plenty Meadow Pipits and Skylarks, odd Raven, Kestrel, Curlew and at least two Red Grouse calling (but still refusing to show themselves to me!). A Cuckoo was calling but well onto the Lancashire side.

Evening wander up mast road.

Cuckoo calling from wilderswood
2 vocal Curlew
a pair of linnets
at least 1 reeling Grasshopper Warbler on Wildersmoor

The soundscape was awesome tonight Meadow pipits being the main contributors. Could have done with a bit of "Wet My Lips" though.

No sight or sound of Quail.

Two Quail singing this morning in the area around the cattle grid just before the mast itself on Winter Hill (no vehicular access; park at the bottom of Mast Road and walk up). Both birds singing up to 07:10 but one at least on the Lancs Side of the border. No sight or sound of yesterday's bird by Adam Hill.

The Quail showed (of its own free will!) again at 5:55pm, 6:10pm and just after 9pm; the latter sighting taking place along the track to Holdens Plantation by the second cattle grid up Mast Road.

Info thanks to Andy Makin

If the bird does happen to still be present tomorrow, it goes without saying that no attempt(s) to flush the bird should made, nor tape lures used. Any such behaviour could unfortunately lead to all future Quail sightings (hearings!) from any county site being withheld from the forum.
